Dr. Shazia M Jamal is a HOD of Microbiology in S.S. Jain Subodh P.G. Autonomous College, Jaipur. She did M. Sc in Botany and PhD in Biotechnology from Rajasthan University in Biotechnology. Her specialization is in Microbiology, Biotechnology, Physiology, Biochemistry, and Plant Physiology. She has more than 18 years of teaching experience in the education sector. 

What are your responsibilities towards the students in S.S. Jain Subodh P.G. Autonomous College, Jaipur?

“Manage, lead and organize various activities, ensure academic ambiance, motivate all members and give reliable facilities on campus”

One of my primary roles is to give academic governance for the department development. Another one is to lead, organize and manage various departmental activities such as Guest lectures, seminar, workshop, conferences, educational and Industrial visits. We ensure academic ambiance through consistent efforts and motivate faculty members. Our students received theory and practical knowledge about subjects from experts in an encouraging environment. We always organize the Board of Studies of U.G. and P.G. course of Microbiology in our curriculum. Students get practical skills through various activities and give well equipped laboratory facilities to expertise their interest. 

How do you establish healthy relations with students and fellow faculty?

“Share best practices to maintain strong relations on our campus”

We always share every matter with each other to build a better healthy relation with students and fellow faculty. The foundation for success is constituting enthusiastic relationships. Our students respond in a positive manner when we deliver excellent content in teaching. Every student's worries are solved easily on campus. 

How do you try to bring a practical approach towards subjects as industry oriented?

“Study tours, projects, assignments and practical applications for pupils on campus”

Some subjects in the curriculum are practice oriented and theoretical knowledge is supported by practice. We give practical knowledge through experimentations in laboratories, study tours, projects, and assignments. Students who are back to practical ideas face challenges to deal with the industrial environment. Practical approach helps them to analyze and think of their interests and set goals to explore the right path. Our campus also provides them state-of-the-art Practical application for a better awareness of the industry sector. The industrial experience might be terrible for them without any precise practical knowledge. It enables them to be aware of the standards, rules, and regulations that are followed in the industrial environment.

How do you strategize the curriculum and update it for the students in S.S. Jain Subodh P.G. Autonomous College, Jaipur?

“Update syllabus regularly and include collaborative learning in the campus curriculum”

Curriculum plays a vital role in the current scenario as per the demand of a subject. It is easy to adapt new standards through a change and prepare a career for students. We should include collaborative learning, competency-based education with active learning, incorporate blended and flipped learning in our curriculum. Our campus updates the syllabus as per the assistance of university officials and internal members.

What are your views on the placements and higher education for students from your department?

“Provide internships, training and soft skills to achieve placement and higher education for pupils”

One of the crucial benchmarks for higher educational institutes is placement. Our motto is to give appropriate positions to pupils through placements and structure courses as per industry requirements. Most of the students are placed in various research institutions as researchers, doing PhD from reputed institutes and working as academicians in universities. The campus placement cell tie-ups with various companies to ensure internship opportunities for students. They apply their theoretical knowledge in real-life situations and build networks with internship experience. Our placement cells trend them in resume making, interview skills, soft skills, and ensure to crack the interview.

Our campus teaches and prepares students with specific skills to cope up with outside competition. Other areas provided for students are intrinsic motivation, strengthening self-concepts, growth mindset, mental toughness, risk analysis skill, social and emotional learning. All these assists them to deal with competition in the world. 

Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students to face real world challenges?

Extracurricular activities play a crucial role in campus life. We improve the skills of pupils with the help of the National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board. The board conducts an entrepreneurship awareness camp in our college. Students get Workshops, internships, Computer Coding, Web Designing, Blog writing, and Graphic Designing. All activities help students with broader social skills, time management, problem-solving attitude, reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, and collaborative abilities.

What challenges do you face to uplift the quality of education of S.S. Jain Subodh P.G. Autonomous College, Jaipur?

“To conduct online classes and increase the quality of learning for students”

The pandemic at the end of March 2020 creates lock down and colleges shut down quickly. We decided to change the offline classes into online mode. It is new for everyone and challenging on the other side. This helps to access intellectual resources for students and officers from IIM take sessions for pupils. We engage them with counseling and fun activities in zoom classes to avoid their boredom.

What approaches do you bring apart from the curriculum to train the students? 

“Using Interdisciplinary Approaches, Training program, Industrial visits and Cooperative learning for students”

One of the approaches we bring apart from the curriculum is managing the learning environment, cooperative learning and technology use. We use interdisciplinary approaches to instruction and hands-on training programs. Students get the chance for Field trips, Industrial visits and Educational visits.

What advice do you give for students to have a prosperous career ahead?

“Work on goals, focus on expanding knowledge and be confident to achieve your career”

My advice for pupils is to be confident and expand your knowledge. Work on your goals and never stop learning. Stay motivated and strive for career excellence. Attend internships and grab a little experience to get a job.
