Research is an invaluable tool in moulding student’s capability for analytical thinking and in- depth-analysis of any topic. To develop such a competence, Journal Club of St. Claret College in association with SCIM organised a Student Capability Enhancement Session on “SAMPLING DESIGN” recently for PG students. The Resource person was Dr. K. V. Ramanathan, Associate Professor, Department of Commerce (PG), St. Claret College, Bengaluru.

Journal Club provides an opportunity for enhancing research skills among students by conducting sessions on various research concepts that helps students to do research of their interested area. The knowledge that they get from these sessions helps them to write the research article. Dr. K. V. Ramanathan explained about developing a sampling design for research. All the methods of Probability and Non probability sampling was discussed in detail along with its examples. Sir also elucidated on the method of selecting sample size for primary based research.

Dr. Ramanathan showed sample size calculation using formula both when the population is known and population is unknown at significance level of 5%. The students were inquisitive to know the concepts which contributed for the success of the webinar by enhancing their research skills. The webinar equipped students to identify appropriate sampling technique for their study. Students also understood sample calculation techniques both manually and in online. Overall, it contributed for their research journey.


WEBINAR ON A-Z of CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILTY

To introduce another facet of the corporate world, Department of Management in association with NSS Unit, St Claret College organised the webinar related to the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility recently.

The session was conducted by Ms Varsha KS who is currently working as Regional lead Manager (CSR) with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Bangalore. Ms Varsha had joined the technical team at the beginning of her career. As it was her passion to give back to society gradually involved with various TCS initiatives and got recognised for her dedication and hardwork.

Ms Varsha explained that the skills at the work place will help the students step up the ladder of corporate however the passion is key driver for the success and one can achieve only if they are able to align one’s personal vision with the organisational vision. The Speaker spoke very passionately about how an organisation would support its employees who would like contribute to organisation and the society parallelly with emphasis on scope of volunteering. The students were also very inquisitive about the role of CSR Regional lead as it was new career opportunity that they realised during the webinar. The speaker explained the different projects, timeline, their purpose and spoke about the statistics of the work done so far. 

In addition, Ms Varsha expressed that she would like to continue her association with our institution and thanked the management and co-ordinators for reaching out. This session marked huge success as it helped the students to realise the successful corporate careers is driven by passion along with skills and talent.

The Department of Computer Science organized an International Conference on ‘Trends & Innovations Implying Future Technology’ in association with Computer Society of India (CSI) on March 24, 2018. The Chief Guest of the day was Dr. E Balagurusamy, Former Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, Chennai and the Keynote Speaker was Dr. Muralidhara B. L., Professor, and Chairman, Department of Computer Science and Applications, Bangalore University. During the inaugural function, Dr. E Balagurusamy highlighted the relevance of creativity and inquisitive mind in developing innovative ideas. In the keynote address on ‘Digital Divide’, Dr. Muralidhara mentioned about how academicians and students together can make a difference to bridge the gap between technology and society. 70 teams from 25 various colleges presented their papers on themes like IoT, Artificial Intelligence, Smart Cities, Data Mining, Wearable Technologies, etc.

The PG Department of Commerce and Department of Commerce jointly organized an Industrial Visit to ‘Reserve Bank of India’, Bangalore for M.Com first and B.Com final year students on February 21, 2018. Two sessions were arranged for the students, where Mr. Praveen, the Assistant General Manager of RBI and the head of Financial Literacy Department of RBI briefed about the different bank terminologies, concepts, functions of RBI and financial inclusion schemes. The students got a practical insight of RBI.
