MBA Admission Process

What is MBA Admission Process?

MBA Admissions in India are mainly conducted through top entrance exams like CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT and NMAT. Some colleges also consider the score of state level exams and private exams conducted by universities.

  • The most important exam for MBA courses in India is CAT, which is conducted in the month of November every year.
  • CAT Result is accepted by more than 1200 top MBA colleges in India, including the prestigious IIMs, IITs and other private B schools. Check the latest CAT 2020 Updates.
  • Private institutes like NMIMS Mumbai and XLRI Jamshedpur conduct their own entrance exams for MBA admission. Some of these include NMAT, XAT, SNAP, etc.
  • For international students, some IIMs consider the score of GMAT and GRE exams.

Alert: MBA Admission 2020 are still going on in many colleges as the exam dates and result dates have been postponed in wake of Covid 19.

MBA Admission process

How to Apply for MBA course?

Once you appear for the exam and clear the cutoff percentile for that exam as released by the college, you can then apply for admission. Given below are the details of steps involved in your MBA admission Journey.

  • Step 1: Apply for entrance exam
  • Step 2: Appear for entrance exam
  • Step 3: Entrance exam result is declared
  • Step 4: Colleges open their admission process
  • Step 5: Log in to the official website of the college you choose, fill the form and deposit the application fees.
  • Step 6: Colleges release their cutoff and candidates are shortlisted.
  • Step 7: If shortlisted, you will get a call from the institute, appear for the internal selection procedure then. This would involve at least 1 of WAT, GD and PI rounds.
  • Step 8: If you clear all the rounds and get the final offer letter, deposit the initial fees and register for the programme.

The most important role in MBA admission is played by the internal selection procedure of the MBA colleges. Once you clear the entrance exam and are shortlisted by the college, you will have to go through rounds like WAT, GD, PI. However, not all the colleges conduct all of these rounds.

  • IIMs’ Final Selection Process focuses on majorly Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). Most of them don’t organize Group Discussion rounds (GD).
  • On the other hand, most of the private B schools like SP Jain Mumbai and MDI Gurgaon organize GD rounds.
  • Your academic record in Class X, Class XII and Graduation matters a lot when it comes to admission in the top IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad. These are used to compute your final composite score.

Apart from clearing the CAT cutoff or the cutoff for other entrance exams, you also need to meet certain eligibility requirements in order to participate in the final selection process of top MBA colleges in India.

Ques. How successful is doing an MBA from Jamia Millia Islamia?

● Top Answer By Rekha Solanki on 02 Nov 21

Ans. If you are not getting admission in top IIMs or reputed B-Schools then Jamia Millia Islamia can be a good option for doing your MBA. If we look at the placements at Jamia, it’s pretty good. The average CTC offered at the university is 7 LPA. Every year around 20-30 companies visit the campus. Like any other institute, the placement cell at Jamia depends on the hard work of the students.  The academics at the university are quite good. There is also good corporate exposure. Faculties are well-experienced. Students get to attend national and international delegation forums. The total course fee for MBA is 2 lakhs. Overall, Jamia Millia Islamia is a good option for doing an MBA. But you should not compare it to IIMs or IITs. Read more

Ques. How is the MBA placement in Utkal University?

● Top Answer By Kiran Chugh on 02 Nov 21

Ans. You should always prefer a recognized B-School or a reputed college doing your MBA. Utkal University is a reputed university but doing an MBA from there may not be wise. As UU doesn’t offer good placement opportunities. I personally know a few people who completed their MBA from UU. According to them, the university doesn’t offer proper placement opportunities. Also, there are no such internship facilities available. So, you will need to search for jobs through off-campus placements.  Although Utkal University can be a good option for doing UG or PG courses, it is not good for an MBA course. Read more

Ques. Is it advisable to go for a new IIM like IIM Jammu and do MBA? It is being mentored by IIM Lucknow so will placement be also mentored by them?

● Top Answer By Megha Rohilla on 29 Oct 21

Ans. One of my friends is studying at IIM Jammu. According to him, it is one of the youngest IIMs, though it has not made it into the big leagues, it is still growing every day. Let me share some facts about it. This will give you a clear idea. It is being mentored by IIM Lucknow, it tries to reach their level of education, thus keeping students busy with several activities that will help them grow intellectually and academically. You will also have committees, clubs, intra and inter-college festivals, competitions, etc. to improve holistic development. They have the same faculty from IIM Lucknow except for one or two subjects.  The pedagogy and curriculum are exactly the same as IIM Lucknow. The student crowd is very enthusiastic and competitive.  In terms of the ROI, IIM Jammu is a good option.  The batch size is small and the number of companies visiting the campus is more thus balancing it out. You cannot expect the placements to be the same as the top IIMs. But they are good, being a new institute. IIM Jammu is the only IIM with a foreign immersion program. Categories IIM Jammu Course Fee 14.82 lakh Placement Percentage 80% Highest CTC 24 LPA Average CTC 10 LPA Recruiting Companies Deloitte, HCL, TATA Power, Tech Mahindra, etc. Lastly, it can be assured that the IIM tag will forever be with you. Though mentored by IIM Lucknow the placements won't be at that level, but they won't be disappointing either. If you work hard, securing a job will not be a problem.Read more

Admission :

One gets the admission in the institute through only offline medium. The admission form has to be purchased for the college campus. For my course, the criteria for getting admission was to qualify for the bachelor?s degree or who has appeared in their final semester exams. There is selection which happens at the institute level and then there is an Entrance which is taken by the institute.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The course is a two years course. The fees are divided accordingly into four semesters. The admission fee is Rs.2000 that is taken in the first semester itself. There is an exam fee that amounts to Rs.1000 which has to be paid in each semester and it is included in the fees. The total fees for the course are Rs.1.57 Lakhs which comparatively very less to the other institute.

Campus Life :

The special feature of the institute is its industrial trainings. There are 5 types of training that are provided to the student based on the interest of the student. There are various criteria that a student has to fulfill to be selected in the courses. Such courses and seminars make us industry-ready.

Faculty :

The knowledge level of every faculty member in our college is just incomparable to any other colleges I have known. Every department has a lead known as the Head of the department. He or she is responsible for all the academic and non- academic activities of the college. Every staff is well versed in their field with high graduation. Their ways of teaching is one which is really inspiring to the students.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The fee in the University is found to be very feasible. It is easy and possible for all students to pay it without any difficulty. Every student has to pay the fees in a year to year basis. Each year has two semester?s for about six months of each. The yearly payment of fees includes the fees for both the semesters. It is also very affordable to all students of every stage.

Placement Experience :

The placement department of the University undertakes the many steps to achieve the desired results for the students. It conducts Placement Test well before the placement arrives in each and every department (Final Year Students). In-plant training or internships for students are provided in industries during summer and winter vacation.

Teachers here are helpful, qualified and knowledgeable. They clarify our doubts. Even guest lecturers are also provided. This course curriculum is relevant, and it makes students industry-ready. Only in some cases, the course curriculum won't be relevant if any strikes are conducted. However, they make us complete the syllabus within the time. Guest lecturers are also available in our college. Teaching is smart. The course curriculum is followed as per the curriculum, and everyone will follow it.

Campus Life :

Our college provides approximately all labs, library facilities related to only our courses, but they don't have books for other competitive exams in the library. Our course deals with complete world facilities and comfort. The books related to our course should be provided in the library in sufficient number. Many events and fest are conducted in our college every year. Annual day is also celebrated in our college.

Once merit list is out students have to go in person for further admission procedure of document verification

Placement Experience :

Placement opportunity is good at our college. Management tries its best to get good companies to college. We are provided with an internship of 6 to 8 weeks at the end of second semester which is very useful. We also have to make a report of the training, which is a plus point when companies come to recruit us. The highest salary offered by company was 75,000 INR monthly.

The course is designed with keeping the new and up keeping trends in market.

Admission :

I always wanted to achieve big things in life and being in the top business school in India was one of them. IIM Amritsar made a college student into a leader. The first step was cracking CAT. After that when you think it is all easy it actually gets tough. The PI and written test was the big leap.In the final selection, a low weightage is given to the CAT score in comparison to a higher weightage for PI-WAT round, academics, work experience among other parameters.

Admission :

I gave the NMAT exam, and got shortlisted. I went to their campus in Mumbai for the Case Discussion (CD) and Personal Interview (PI) processes. After that, they looked at all the academic and professional details, and I got in. I had pretty good NMAT scores, and I also worked in a company after my graduation for a couple of years, so I was pretty confident about getting in! It's all about getting the answers right in the interview.I had heard about NMIMS from a few seniors of my college that had taken admission there after graduation, and I heard fairly positive reviews from them. I looked online, reading accounts of former students and looking at some statistics, and it all helped me decide on making this college my destination. The location played a big part too! Mumbai is a great location, with different corporate sectors all around, and generally a good place to live too.

Campus Life :

There's a lot of different clubs and activities. Some are completely extra-curricular, such as sports, or cultural activities like dance/drama, while some are more like supplements to what we learn, like Finance or Marketing clubs. Frequent workshops were held as well, and I was part of the Social enterprise cell that organised workshops, lectures, seminar, conferences and trainings. The gender ratio is better than most colleges. The number of female students is about half that of the male students. There isn't much visible discrimination, although campus rules are fairly strict.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The curriculum is well thought out. There are so many different subjects that cover different areas. I had a certain aim, a vision, of what I wanted to do once I had my MBA degree in hand. So I went ahead and chose subjects that felt important to me. The internship was super-helpful, as it gave me some experience. Exams were a little different in format than what I was used to from my undergraduate days, but it was good and challenging. It was a little bit hectic, of course, with all the competition and the pressure to excel.
