VISA

  • The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) is responsible for issuing visas for entry to Australia.
  • Students who are planning to study a registered course are required to obtain a student visa.
  • With this visa the student can :
    • Participate in an eligible course of study in Australia
    • Travel in and out of Australia
    • Work up to 40 hours every 2-week period once the course starts
  • This is a temporary visa to study for up to 5 years. The type of course and its length will determine the length of stay.
  • Primary school children enrolled in years 1-4 can only be granted a student visa for a maximum of 2 years. 
  • If the student visa will expire before the graduation the student might be eligible for a Visitor visa (subclass 600). The student will need a letter from the education provider with the date of the graduation.
  • The visa costs from AUD620 for the main applicant, unless they are exempt.
  • The visa application can take longer to process if the student :
    • Do not fill it incorrectly.
    • Do not include all the documents that need more information.
    • It takes time to verify the information.
  • The Eligibility to apply for a visa is:
    • Age – less than 20 years old when you begin Year 12.
    • Evidence of enrolment
    • The student must have taken the English language test in the 2 years before the student applies to for a student visa.
    • English language evidence exemptions:

    • The student is a citizen and holds a passport from the UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Republic of Ireland 
    • The student is an applicant who is a Foreign Affairs or, Defence sponsored student or a Secondary Exchange student (AASES)
    • 2 years before applying for the student visa, you completed, in Australia and in the English language, either the Senior Secondary Certificate of Education or a substantial component of a course leading to a qualification from the Australian Qualifications Framework at the Certificate IV or higher level, while you held a student visa.

  • Employers look favorably on students who can balance study and work commitments because it shows good time-management skills and a willingness to work. 
  • As a guide, the student should avoid working more than 15 hours per week during the semester if the student is a full-time student, otherwise, it might affect the studies.
