McGill Review from Local Biochem Perspective

Romina Filippelli
7.8 /10

It is the most elite/highest ranked university in my province (Quebec), as well as highly distinguishable worldwide and in Canada. Further, as a science major, I was heavily influenced by the research-centered ideology of McGill.

Course Curriculum :

I love the way Biochemistry is set out and I feel like each subsequent course builds on the previous ones. For instance, taking classes about protein structure and how proteins can be regulated prepared me to understand metabolic pathways. I also like how biochemistry has a year-long lab class (BIOC220/320) which teaches very important and versatile techniques and helps you learn how to write in a scientific manner.

Exams :

I did not take any exams for entrance to university as I went into uni as a CEGEP student, with 30 credits.

Internship :

My college did not directly provide me with an internship but I was able to obtain one that was unpaid (volunteer). I worked as a research assistant in a lab for 1 year in the faculty of surgery (surgical innovation). The overall experience was positive and I learned a lot about project management, leadership, and organization.

Fees :

My tuition is around 1500$ per semester but it fluctuates depending on how many credits I'm taking (14-17). You need to pay more for a summer course. There are some administration fees but you can opt out. Similarly, there is health care but you can opt out.

Examination Structure :

Usually, the grading schemes are as follows: 20% 3 midterms + 40% final, 75% final + 25% midterm, 60% final + 40% midterm, or 10% 4 quizzes + 60% final. Sometimes there are weekly online quizzes, sometimes there are participation grades. The exams are typically multiple choice, but as the levels of courses increase, short answers and essay questions get incorporated around the 300-400 levels.

Faculty :

I think the faculty is very competitive but overall I have a lot of respect for it. It feels like "home" and everyone is willing to help each other out. but that being said, we are all "top dogs" and it sometimes feels overwhelming and lonely.
