Course Duration
The duration of the course is 2 years, spread over 4 semesters. Each semester is usually six months long. The first year of the course offers a definite theoretical knowledge and practical experience whereas the last year mainly focuses on dissertation and project submission.
Eligibility Criteria for M.Tech. in Food Chain Management

- To pursue M.Tech. in Food Chain Management, candidates need to have a B.Tech./ B.E. in Food Chain Management or allied branches (Food Science / Food Science and Technology /Food Technology and Management / Food Technology/ Dairy & Food Technology/ Dairy & Food Engineering/ Agricultural and Food Engineering) from a recognized university obtained through the 10+2+4 system of education.
- The minimum score required is 50% (differs from institute to institute) in aggregate or equivalent CGPA in graduation. A relaxation of 5% marks is given for reserved category (SC/ST/OBC) candidates.
- Students in the last semester of their graduation are also eligible to apply for the course, provided they fulfill the eligibility criteria.
Admission Process for M.Tech. in Food Chain Management
Admission to M.Tech. in Food Chain Management is based on the candidate’ performance in a relevant entrance examination (national/ State /university- level), followed by a round of personal interview.
IITs and NITs prefer students who have successfully cleared the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam with a valid score. A few engineering institutes provide direct admission to eligible candidates on the basis of their performance in at the level of graduation. Shortlisted students are needed to attend counselling, once they successfully clear the entrance examination or meet the eligibility criteria.
GATE is the country’s main entrance examination conducted for admission to the course.
- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) – GATE is an all-India examination that is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) namely IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee to tests the candidate’s comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science.
The entrance exam is primarily held for admission to post graduate courses in the field of engineering, technology, architecture and science. The GATE score is accepted for admissions to various PG programs.
The online test is a multiple- choice and numerical- type exam divided across three sections, namely General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and respective subject specific knowledge.
- NIFTEM Entrance Test – NIFTEM conducts a Common Entrance Exam for those who have not qualified GATE. Non-GATE candidates are needed to qualify the Common Entrance Exam (70 marks) in place of GATE, conducted by NIFTEM at NIFTEM campus, followed by personal interview (30 marks). The Common Entrance Exam is not conducted if all seats have been filled by GATE candidates.
The written test conducted for Non-GATE candidates consists of seventy (70) objective type questions of one mark each. Negative marking is applicable for each wrong answer and 0.25 marks are deducted. The duration of the test is one hour.
The test consists of two parts, with the first containing twenty (20) questions to test Mental Agility, English and General Knowledge of the candidate, and the other containing fifty (50) questions to test the candidate’s knowledge base in their chosen areas.
