Essential GRE Quant Tips and Tricks to Score Well

If you are preparing for the GRE and looking for a perfect guide on how to score GRE quantitative with a solid score, then you are at the right place. For students who are studying for GRE, it can be useful to pay attention to the GRE quant strategies. Making GRE quant notes can really help in last-minute revision for the test.

The GRE has basically four types of Quantitative Reasoning questions - Quantitative Comparison questions, Multiple Choice questions, Multiple Choice questions, and Numeric Entry questions. Test content of GRE quant includes Arithmetic, Algebra, GRE Geometry, and Data Analysis. Now let’s have a look at some GRE math tricks and shortcuts that can be helpful for you.

GRE Quant Strategies

You need effective GRE strategies to help you achieve the best possible GRE quantitative score. Here are a few tips and proven GRE strategies that will take your GRE preparation to the level. Try them out on your next GRE practice test.

Mock Tests:

The first and foremost thing a candidate must do is to give a lot of mock tests. No matter how good you are at quant, solving questions after writing two big essays is tough. So you must give full-length mock tests.

Speed:

You have 20 questions and 35 minutes and you cannot give 2 minutes per question. Take a look at the whole paper first and you will see which questions you can answer and which questions you cannot answer. So skip those questions first as you can always come back to them later. Don’t waste time on a difficult question.

Elimination:

Go for the answer elimination way, do not use the analytical approach. If you see a question where you can put the values and you can get the answer faster then do those questions first. Most GRE questions do not require a calculator so try to avoid using the on-screen calculator. Also, it is faster to solve the questions on your own than using that on-screen calculator.

Attempt All Questions:

Unlike other competitive exams, the GRE doesn’t have a negative marking so try to attempt all of the questions.

Maintain Error Log:

While practicing for GRE quant always maintains an error log. Make notes of the sections that were difficult for you to solve while giving the mock test. In this way, you will remember to focus on the hard sections and work on them.

Select Difficult Questions:

Suppose you are very good at GRE algebra and you don’t do well with geometry, then focus on geometry. Do not invest time in something you are already good at. Focus on those concepts that give you a hard time while practicing.

Solve 160+ Level Questions:

The Pareto principle states that “for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of the causes.” You can easily score 150+ in GRE if you practice even half of it. But if you really do want to score 160+ then you need to focus on that 80% which others are not doing. If you solve 160+ level questions then only you will be able to solve the other questions better. Because practicing with harder questions will train the mind and other questions will be a lot easier to solve.

GRE Quant Time Management:

Since GRE requires you to solve 20 questions in 35 minutes, focus on one segment at a time. If you are doing geometry then try to solve those 20 questions within 35 minutes then take a 5-minute break and jump on to the next section. Doing this will give you a good sense of time. You should not take more than 1.5 minutes to solve these GRE Math questions. Also, use shortcut methods rather than long approaches to solve questions.

GRE quant is all about basic math skills, speed, and elimination. Apart from all these strategies, you can also opt for GRE math prep courses to make your score game stronger. They can help you understand precisely how and where to spend your time to see really notable increments in your GRE scores.

In addition, a large number of word problems originate from algebraic concepts. Algebra, Data Analysis, and GRE arithmetic carry the highest GRE Quant Topic Wise Weightage on the GRE Quant test. Therefore, it is recommended to focus on learning and review, starting with algebra.

There are numerous GRE quant preparation books and GRE math practice pdf available on the internet for students to study from. Incorporating the above-mentioned strategies into your preparation will definitely increase your chances to score 160+ in GRE.

Ques. What is the percentile required to get into ISB Hyderabad?

● Top Answer By Akanksha Sharma on 30 Jan 23

In case you are enquiring about the CAT percentile let me clarify that ISB Hyderabad does not take into consideration CAT scores. It accepts GMAT/GRE scores only. Most importantly, the ISB Shortlisting process is profile-based. This means even with a lower percentile you can manage to get shortlisted provided you have an excellent profile. There is no fixed cutoff for GMAT. However, a 700+ GMAT score isn't a must-have for ISB if your application is strong in other areas. According to an ISB spokesperson, candidates were admitted to the 2021 cohort with scores as low as 580, and as high as 780. So the GMAT score range for ISB is 580-780....Read more

Ques. Which exam to opt for admission in ISB hyderabad, GMAT or GRE?

● Top Answer By Dhwani on 30 Jan 23

Of the two entrance exams, GMAT and GRE, the former is a better option. ISB Hyderabad has recently started accepting GRE scores. This doesn’t mean that taking the GRE is a bad idea. Many business schools apart from ISB are now accepting GRE scores. The best part is that ISB won’t be converting your GRE scores to GMAT for comparison during the MBA admissions. GRE is suitable for students who are considering other PG options apart from MBA like MS or MA.  For someone who is sure of their career in an MBA, the GMAT is a better choice because GRE is much more dynamic. GMAT shows your commitment to MBA and thereby increases your chances of admission in comparison to GRE which shows that you are open to various options. ISB Hyderabad prefers GMAT over GRE also because the former is a more quantitatively challenging exam than the latter.  Certain firms may ask for your GMAT score before shortlisting you for your interview. These include the biggest firms in the corporate world like McKinsey So from these points, we can safely conclude that GMAT is a better option for MBA students provided that you are sure of your course....Read more
