The Master’s in Computer Science covers this fascinating and hyper-relevant discipline from multiple angles. The technical side of Computer Science deals with computer operations, like system software, computer networks, and programming environments. The theoretical foundations cover the limits of what can be computed, computational efficiency, correctness, and the intricacies of concurrent execution. Software engineering studies the construction and maintenance of large and often mission-critical software systems that need to be maintained by large teams of people. Because of its prominent role in everyday life, non-functional aspects of information technology are gaining importance in Computer Science, most notably the energy efficiency of data centers and the security of computer systems.
Computing is a fundamental phenomenon in computer science. Concurrency naturally occurs in the specification of distributed systems; their analysis, verification, and implementation require a systematic approach, aided by formal methods. In the Foundations of Computing and Concurrency track, students will take courses ranging from distributed algorithms to protocol validation, and from term rewriting to logical verification, as well as some general courses in logic and mathematics.
This track is part of the joint Master’s in Computer Science, aimed at students with an interest in computing and concurrency, and the application of formal methods for system design.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent. We do not require a GRE or GMAT test score.
- Subjects like Databases, Automata, Graph Theory, Compilers, Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics (Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics) increases student’s chances of admission to this program.
- A Bachelor's degree obtained at an applied university or higher vocational education (HBO in Dutch) in most cases does not grant direct access to the program (only exceptionally high ranking students stand a chance of admission).
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- VU Amsterdam requires all applicants to take an English test. Exceptions are made for students who have completed a bachelor's or master's in Canada, the USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, or Australia.
- TOEFL and IELTS tests must have been completed no more than two years before 1st September of the year in which your course starts.
- Note: TOEFL MyBestScore is not accepted.
- Please note that students who need a study visa must submit their English test results before 1 June.
International students hailing from non-English speaking countries also need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
