D.G.Vaishnav College: Capt. Dr..S Santhosh Baboo, Principal

Dr S Santhosh Baboo is the Principal and Research Supervisor, Postgraduate and Research Department of Computer Science at Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College, Chennai, TamilNadu. He has around Thirty years of Postgraduate teaching experience in Computer Science, which includes Six years of administrative experience and nine months as Registrar at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Tirunelveli. He is a member of, board of studies, in several autonomous colleges, and designs the curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Equipped with a Masters degree in Computer Science and a Doctorate in Computer Science, he is a visiting faculty to IT companies. Published more than 100 papers in Journal and Conference. He produced Thirty-eight Ph.D. Scholars in the field of Computer Science. He is having One UGC Major Research Project (2012-2015).

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Ability to bring change in the society and the nation through educational policies”

I started my career as an Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Computer Science at St. Joseph College, Cuddalore. I have been serving as a teacher for over 30 years. The experience and exposure I had gained have enabled me to keep my pledge of serving the people and giving back to society. My experience has also taught me that hard work is always rewarded.

What is your philosophy of leadership?

“A leader has to be a good team player, a negotiator and above all humane and understanding”

I strongly endorse the adage “Teamwork, works”. In my view, a leader should be open-minded, willing to listen, and ready to give credit to the team. My approach to being a delegator has been satisfactory so far. I have always encouraged young faculty members and students to put forward their ideas and suggestions to improve our quality of education.

How do you plan the marketing and administration of your school?

“Trusting staff and giving responsibility is a management strategy of our institution”

Our college has been recognised as one of the reputed colleges in the city. Our students are our brand ambassadors. DGVC has become synonymous with quality education, ensuring the overall development of the students. Our college has 9800 students and we offer 6 Ph.D. and M.Phil Programmes, 18 Postgraduate Programmes, 30 Under Graduate Programmes. Planning and implementation play a key role in effective administration. All important decisions, planning and strategizing are done by me in consultation with the management and department heads.

I aim What can an inbound student gain from studying here in your institution?

A student from another country getting admission to our college will gain from the expertise of our experienced members of the faculty. In terms of sports and extracurricular activities, our college has been providing an excellent platform for students to exhibit their abilities. Our institution has been constantly striving to revise and revamp the curriculum in tune with the emerging trends in the various disciplines. Every effort is taken to ensure industry-academia collaboration.

Experts from the industry are part of the Board of Studies and Academic Council.
We have MOU’s with National and International bodies to train our students and encourage them to take up an internship with various industries.
From time to time, we keep a track of the industrial developments and keep modifying and updating our syllabus accordingly.

My prime responsibility is to steer the institution ahead in its trajectory of progress. I would ensure knowledge acquisition and skill development among the students in the core areas of their study. Also, help them gain exposure and training in the latest trends and technologies.

The greatest strength, I wish to reiterate is its commitment to ensuring that the youth of our nation emerge as tomorrow’s leaders. The college has ensured the holistic development of the students and nurture in them a culture defined by the spirit of excellence. With the support of the management, we have built up a state of the art infrastructure in the college premises with sophisticated lab facilities, sports complex, ICT tools, Library, green campus, cafeteria and hostel facility.
