Dr Lalit Kumar Deb is the Dean of School of Law at Birla Global University. Bringing in myriad of experiences in the field of education, he describes how he progressively became an effective leader. Also, he describes his leadership style which, he thinks, is effective and for the benefit of the organization. As a Dean, his role is to inspire and motivate faculty members and students to bring out the best in them. He compares the differences and similarity in the Indian education system to that of in the foreign countries and explains why the institute is a hub of global learning and excellence. In the later segment of the interview he explains the challenges possessed by the current pandemic and how it has created difficulties in the education system. The pandemic has also given the opportunity to evolve and strive for excellence. On a concluding note, he gives his valuable advice to the students. He shares his thoughts that although we have advanced in terms of technology, human touch is necessary for moulding the students into good human beings.

I believe in participative leadership and participative decision making

I joined the Birla Global University as Dean of the Birla School of Law in 2018. We started with a few students, but the number increased in the following year. The third batch of students is taking admissions during the current year, 2020-21. I believe in participative leadership and participative decision making. I trust my staff and encourage them to come up with ideas and suggestions, and support them in completion of the tasks. I believe in inspiring and encouraging others to bring out the best in them.

The principles of law and the concept of justice are common throughout the world

Many of the Indian laws are based on international norms, such as human rights law, intellectual property law, Juvenile Justice Act, humanitarian law, International Law, hence students from abroad can get insights into the basic principles.

Participation in different activities pertaining to law forum builds up competitive spirit in the students 

The curriculum of the School of law strictly adheres to the guidelines prescribed by the Bar Council of India and is on par with that of the National Law Universities. The students are permitted to participate in state level and international level moot court competitions and other activities. Such participation builds up the competitive spirit in the students and brings forth their latent talents.

The role of the Dean is to inspire and motivate the faculty and students and bring out the best in them. The purpose of legal education is not only to make good lawyers and judges but also to create good human beings.

We want to strive for continuous developments along with providing quality education

Birla School of law is a nascent institute, established with the sole aim of providing quality legal education. Initially we have started the BBA, LL.B (Hons) course, with a capacity of 60 students. During the next decade we propose to start LL.M courses and also Ph. D programme. Short term courses on developing areas of study shall also be conducted. Quality education and creation of good human beings shall always be the motto.

The institute is a hub of global learning and excellence 

Birla School of law is a mini India, having students from different parts of the country. The school is situated in a lovely environmental friendly campus of Birla Global University. The huge playground has facilities for games, such as cricket, football, and badminton and basketball. Hence, besides studies, the students can develop physically and emotionally. There is a gym with all modern equipment. Physical activities go on side by side with education.

The University is known for its excellence and there are many factors that form up the strength of the university. Firstly, its association with the Birla group of educational institutions. It is a legacy left behind by Late Dr Sarala Birla and Late B. K. Birla. The University follows their vision of education and philanthropy. The present Covid 19 pandemic has brought in many challenges to educational institutions throughout the world

The situation necessitates more online activities, including classes and exams. After the pandemic bringing back normalcy with safety will be a challenge

In future, the Birla Global University will be establishing new schools and starting new courses and disciplines, hence getting good and dynamic teachers with vision, who can motivate students and take the University to great heights, is the next challenge. Creating good human beings, with knowledge, wisdom and skills is the ultimate challenge.

The human touch is necessary for moulding the students into good human beings

The present generation of students feel that they can get all the information from the net. In spite of all technological advancements, the machines cannot be a substitute for a teacher. The human touch is necessary for moulding the students into good human beings. The students should read a lot of books, be sincere in the class, and interact with the teachers and fellow students. They should participate in all curricular and extracurricular activities. Hard work, sincerity and discipline are the key to success.
