Which is better after graduate in civil: an M.Tech in transportation engineering from an IIT, or construction management from an IIT or NICMAR?

Studied M.Tech in Electrical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur

IIT Delhi and IIT Madras offer a Post-Graduation in Construction Technology and Management. To secure a seat at either of the institutes, you must obtain a good rank in the GATE examination.

IIT Delhi gives more weightage to the technical aspects of the course, while NICMAR focuses more on the managerial aspects of Construction. The curriculum of the course is unmatched, yet the placements, at times, can be quite unanticipated.

Both the courses are quite equivalent to each other on various stages whatsoever. But, when the decision boils down to which among the both is better, then IIT Delhi might win the race.

Now, the Transportation Engineering department from IITs is indeed a great course. The average package some of my seniors from this course secured was about INR 5 LPA. However, by all means, your placement partially also depends upon whether or not you are typically prepared for it.

Will it be worth doing mtech in transportation from iit bhubaneswar instead choosing water resources from iit kgp ?

B.Tech CSEIIT Bhubaneswar

This totally depends upon your interest in the subject. You should give preference to the subject rather than a degree from college because your subject will shape your future.

The school of water resources is one of the pioneer centers for education and training in water quality and quantity management. There is an advanced research water quality lab in IIT Kharagpur. It is an old IIT and will provide more opportunities for higher studies in foreign universities, people also go to foreign universities from IIT Bhubaneswar but opportunities in IIT KGP will be more.

The water resources have limited scope considering the Indian employment scenario. If you are giving preference to the subject then join IIT Bhubaneswar. If your preference is not the subject then join IIT KGP because exposure and opportunities will be more in IIT KGP. A student planning for Ph.D. after M-tech will have much better scopes in IIT KGP than IIT Bhubaneswar.

SK

Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (2018)

In India, very few institutes offer M.Tech in Transportation Engineering. This course is somewhat similar to Automobile Engineering but not quite the same and pursuing it from a reputed institute like IIT Bhubaneswar offers a lot of opportunities. Students with a civil engineering degree can opt for the MTech Transportation Engineering program. The eligibility criteria for applying into the program is a BTech degree with an aggregate of 60% in a similar field. Students are also required to clear the GATE cutoff for Transport Engineering for applying. The course fee for M.Tech Transport Engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar is 2.34 lakh/year.

The course curriculum for M.Tech in Transportation Engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar involves planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of transportation facilities. Transportation engineering also concerns the driver-vehicle interface and user interface of road signs, signals, and markings. The program is a good choice if you wish to join the public service. Before pursuing the M.Tech, doing an internship with any transportation company or civil engineering firm will provide the experience needed in planning and designing transportation projects, preparing estimates, and evaluating traffic patterns.

Which is better, an MTech in transportation in IIT Bhubaneswar or construction technology in NIT Warangal? I’m not much interested in MTech and I want to prepare for other exams.

M.Tech Transportation Engineering National Institute of Technology Warangal (2018)

Both Universities are equally good. IIT Bhubaneswar is a new IIT and still in the developing phase. But the IIT is a brand name that has global recognition. Being a new IIT the Civil department of IIT Bhubaneswar is not at the same level as old NITs but on the other hand, transportation is a safe career option over construction technology in terms of job security. And despite being a new IIT, this institute has a good placement record. In 2019, there was 68% placement from M.tech courses with decent CTC. The average salary was around 11.4 LPA.

NIT Warangal is one of the best NIT in India. Although the faculties of this university are not permanent, they change frequently and are under the supervision of the Structures division. In terms of placement, this place is also quite good the average salary went up to almost 7 lakhs/annum last year. Regarding education and placement NIT Walangel is preferable over IIT Bhubaneswar as it is the older institute with a large alumni base.

As far as the second question is concerned, M.Tech requires a lot of determination, time, focus, and dedication. If you are not interested then it is a waste of time. You will have very little time left with classes and lab practices in M.Tech 1st year so preparing for other exams will not be that easy. But it’s not impossible if you manage the time properly so that balance is maintained between the preparation of other courses and M.Tech.

M.Tech Transportation Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Warangal (2018)

MTech in Transportation might not be a popular subject but it can land you in some jobs of Civil Engineering and Automobile Engineering. An MTech degree will help you to gain further knowledge about the subject if you, later on, want to pursue a career in Teaching or Research. In the 2019 placement drive, more than 89 companies have visited IIT Bhubaneswar for placements. The average salary package offered to an MTech graduate was 11 lakhs per annum.

Construction Technology and Management is a closely related field to Civil Engineering. After completing MTech you can further get into research and development about the subject. Also, students from NIT Surathkal have received an average salary package of 7 lakhs per annum by recruiting companies like Alliance International, G. Gheewala, ABC consultants, Shella Consultants, Delta recruitment, R.K. International, MM Enterprises, International Manpower resources, Randstad India, Dynamic Group, Hector & Streak Consulting Pvt. Ltd., etc. for Real Estate, Infrastructure, Projects, and oil and gas sectors.

Both subjects are closely related to the Civil Engineering department, you can choose by your college preference, subject preference, ranks, etc. IIT Bhubaneswar would be a better choice due to its better placements and popularity among the professionals.

Should I prefer an MTech in transportation at IIT Bhubaneshwar or construction technology in NIT Warangal?

B.Tech. in Computer Science & Computer Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Warangal

There are various factors that show that NITW is better than IIT Bhubaneshwar. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • The Alumni Base of NITW is better than that of IITBBS.

  • The ranking of NITW is better than IITBBS.

  • The placements for the CSE department in NITW are more efficient than the Mechanical department of IIT Bhubaneshwar.

  • NITW has an incredibly good college culture as compared to IIIB.

  • The infrastructure of NITW is also well constructed.

Choose IIT BBS Mechanical only if you have a strong interest in the field. Otherwise, no match exists between the options. If the choice is between these two, NITW is without a doubt the better option.
