B-Tech/M-Tech(Dual) in Agriculture and Food Engineering/ Financial Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP) (Graduated 2021)

When it comes to MNC at IIT Kharagpur, the course is primarily focused on Mathematics, while only a small portion is related to coding or computer sciences. However, this can actually work to your advantage because the course structure of MNC department at IIT Kgp offers you an equal opportunity to enhance your skills in coding as well as in Finance or Analytics.

Moreover, if you happen to fall in love with your course, you also have the opportunity to pursue a Phd in Applied Mathematics as you will be graduating with an MSc degree.

Besides the academic advantages, you can also benefit from the well-developed Institute culture and Placement Cell of IIT Kharagpur, which can help shape your career. Taking all of these factors into consideration, I strongly recommend that you consider pursuing MNC at IIT Kharagpur.

There is no right option as it all is a matter of preferences that varies from person to person. So the answer is generic and can be helpful for someone who hasn't yet decided on a branch. My preference order will go from the safest to the riskiest option.

  1. Safest option-IIT Bombay: Without any doubt, IIT Bombay is the safest option among the three. The brand value and tag are more than enough to remove any risks in your life. A majority of students chose IIT Bombay just for the tag and end up with Finance roles or go for MBA.

Pros

  • The IIT Tag will help you get a higher salary and package than others
  • You get more exposure to industries because of the locational advantage

Cons:

  • Students who choose a branch for the IIT tag and not because of interest in it may end up regretting it later. This will affect your overall performance thus making you regret the decision.
  1. The second safest option-IIT Kharagpur MnC:

This branch is highly suitable for those interested in both CS and Mathematics. This option is safe in the sense that an average CGPA might get you a non-core job while a good CGPA then this branch has a high employment rate and will work in your favor. Its graduates are highly demanded today.

  1. Most Risky - BITS Pilani CSE: This option should be considered only if you are cent percent sure about CSE, else you will be stuck here. CS enthusiasts may find this option even better than IIT Bombay.

Pros: You get the chance to pursue the most coveted engineering branch at an extremely reputed institute.

Cons: You will suffer a lot if you are not able to meet the performance standards of the branch. Moreover, you will have no option to go for Finance roles or higher studies which most IITians who are unable to do well in their core branch do.

Thus we can conclude that being an IITian guarantee more success mainly because of the tag and the vast options available.

  • IIT Bombay Civil - Entrepreneurial Spirit, Life Quality, Safest Option
  • BITS Pilani CSE - Course of your choice that is highly coveted
  • IIT Kharagpur MnC - Interest in Mathematics and the IIT tag

The pros of each branch above can be considered to make a more informed decision.

Is an integrated MSc in mathematics and computing in BIT Mesra a good option?

PS

Studied Mathematics and Computing at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (2021)

Mathematics and Computing is a stream that contains concepts of mathematics merged with sophisticated computer science. It is evident that computer science fundamentals are dependent on applied mathematical skills, but in the present syllabus for M.Sc in mathematics and computing, things are not as they used to be.

The table below gives a brief overview of the integrated course in BIT Mesra.

Course introduced in

2011

Total Fees (5 years)

Rs.6.6 Lakhs

Median Salary per annum

Rs.4.8 Lakhs

Average Salary per annum

Rs.6 Lakhs (approx)

Highest Salary per annum

Rs.11 Lakhs

Placement percentage

80% (approx)

Key highlights:

  • According to the present syllabus, fundamentals of Data Structure, Computational Statistics for AI and Machine Learning, Algorithms, etc. are not well developed for computer science graduates due to their weak background in mathematics.

According to surveys, most students in mathematics don’t have enough concepts built in Information Systems, Computer Architecture, Data Mining, HPSC, Numerical Analysis, Cryptography, and Network Security. These concepts are essential for software design, simulation, and analysis in engineering economics, military, aerospace, etc. The integrated course in Mathematics and computing is the best bridging stream in this scenario, providing an all-in-one knowledge-based syllabus on both mathematical concepts and computer science technologies.

  • Both domains are covered equally in Mathematics and computing, and students can’t choose any one of them in the curriculum.
  • BIT Mesra is a constantly developing institute in this stream, and the students are touching the peak of success through research and placements. Several research projects of avionics, robotics, aerospace, etc have seen the involvement of students from this stream.
  • The placement of maths and computing has a major improvement throughout the years. Having almost negligible count, in the beginning, it has now almost reached an 80% placement rate, with several MNCs offering decent salary packages ranging from 3 LPA to 11 LPA.

Overall, the Mathematics and computing stream, though comparatively newer to the institute, is now under a tremendous rate of progress and is worth opting for.
