M.Sc. (Mathematics): Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for this course in colleges like Christ University Bangalore, St Stephen's College New Delhi, Loyola College Chennai, Mount Carmel College Bangalore is graduation in any discipline with Mathematics and English as a main subjects with minimum 50% aggregate however institutes prefer students with a B.Sc. /B.E. /B.Tech. degree.

Course Structure

The curriculum of Masters of Science in Mathematics includes projects, assignments, analyzing large amount of numerical data and seminars. It also includes designing of surveys and experiments.The course structure includes the entire spectrum of mathematics from Real Analysis to Probability theory, that are studied during the span of 2 years.

Scheme of Assessment

The evaluation of a student in this course is through Internal Assessment and External Assessment.

The internal asessment comprises of 20% of total marks depending upon the institution which includes, class representation, assignments, projects, thesis and attendance.

Main written examination forms the rest of the portion of 80% where the student’s understanding of the concpets are tested.

Nature of data and methods of compilation, representation of data,measures of central tendency,measuring variability of data, tools of interpreting numerical data, like mean, median,quartiles, standard deviation,skewness and kurtosis and correlation analysis

It includes making and represention of histograms, frequency curve,frequency polygon.

Differential Geometry

Tensors,crves with torsion,envelopes and developable surfaces,  involutes,tangent planes and funcdamental magnitudes.

It discusses binomial,circle of curvature.

Linear Programming

Convex sets,opened and closed half-spaces , sensitivity analysis,parametric programming, transportation problems.

It comprises of linear programming and its examples.

Complex Analysis

Geometric representation of numbers,complex valued functions,power series,trigonometric functions,  Cauchy’s theorem for rectangle, in a disk and its general form.

It focuses on various trignomateric functions.

Geometry of Numbers

Lattices,Hermite’s theory on minima of positive definite quadratic forms.

It teaches basics of Lettices, Minkowskis’ Fundamental Theorem.

Elasticity

Analysis of strain, analysis of stress,  Equations of Elasticity,  Inverse and semi-inverse methods of solution, General Equations of the plane problems in polar co ordinates.

It discusses scalar invariants  of a tensor of order two, basics of strains and it geometrical interpretation.

Vector Analysis

Scalar and vector point functions,Green’s and Stoke’s theorems, Curi-linear coordinates,the equation of motion and first integral.

It includes all the knowledge of vectors from theorems to their applications.

Field Theory

Fields,theorem of Galois theory,Cyclotomic extensions,Lagrange’s theorem on primitive elements, degree field extensions and all other forms and applications of fields, and solvability of polynomials by radicals

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose this course because I Graduated in mathematics. The faculty is good and the student ratio is also stable. Qualification of the faculty is decent but they are contractual. Exams have been taken on time. And as for exams to pass. Not too much difficult to pass.
