Vinod Gupta School of Management - [VGSoM], Kharagpur : 10 answered questions

Ques. How was your IIT Kharagpur VGSoM interview?

● Top Answer By Divyanka Gupta on 22 Jun 21

Ans. One of my friends attended the IIT Kharagpur VGSoM interview back in 2019. Here is his experience in brief. After he reported to the venue at the assigned time he was assigned a WAT Topic. WAT Topic - Nature vs Nature. Just simply going green won’t help. They were told to first fill in their personal details. On the remaining 3/4 part of the given, they were asked to write up about their topic. They were strictly told not to write anything on the back, since it won’t be considered. There was no word limit assigned and the time given for WAT was 20 minutes. PI: His PI was short and lasted around 10-12 minutes. There were two panelists one was an alumnus and the other was a professor from the college. He was asked the following questions. Give your introduction. As a functional consultant, what work did you do? Describe the difference between 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G. Why were Union Territories formed? WiMAX Technology, what is it? Why it is not implemented in India? What is the role of NITI Ayog in India? He was able to convert successfully after the interview.Read more

Ques. What's your choice, IMT Ghaziabad (PGDM marketing) or VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur (operations management)?

● Top Answer By Janvi Bhambri on 19 Mar 21

Ans. There is always a dilemma amongst the MBA aspirants whether to join B-School or Non-B-Schools (IITs or FMS). There are various factors due to which these colleges differentiate a lot. Talking particularly about VGSoM and IMT-Ghaziabad, they both are the top category colleges and definitely comparable.  The first and the most important point to consider is that pursuing MBA from VGSoM gives you the brand name of IIT Kharagpur. Although IITs are mostly known for Engineering programs, 3 IITs i.e. Delhi, Mumbai, and Kharagpur campuses. They have set a high benchmark for MBA programs as well. And obviously, the tag of IIT helps you in each and every stage whether it is placements, guest lectures, or anything. VGSoM has completed 25 years and it has a very strong alumni base throughout the world. It stands alone and comparable to other top-notch B-Schools. Campus Life - IIT Kharagpur is well equipped with everything that a student might need for the successful completion of their courses. From transport facility to daily routine needs, everything is easily accessible. On the campus, only bicycles are allowed as a transport facility. IIT Kharagpur has the largest campus equipped with gyms, halls, sports grounds, and many more. There are theatres outside the campus and a few hostels as well.  Placements -  The biggest advantage that you will have in IITs is the small-batch seize which really helps you in getting better placements. The companies visit the campus and recruit students with decent packages. Even for the summer internships, you’ll get opportunities very easily.  Hostel Life -  At IIT Kharagpur, one separate hostel is allocated to all the boys of VGSoM where they are provided with double occupancy. As almost 14000 students are there in the 2100 acre campus along with faculties, you get a chance to mingle with the brilliant minds of India.  Apart from that, entering into boys/girls hostels is not allowed. But there are many places inside the campus which are open all night and you can sit with a group of friends and have tea together with a group study. Mess food is decent although you might face some problems at the beginning if you are from the north/west because there will always be a difference in taste. Now comparing IITs with others will be like comparing FMS with IIM-A. You surely cannot expect the same feel or similar competition as it is there in IMT/XIMB etc with such a huge batch size and being central government institutes. The kind of vibrant culture of B-School would be lacking a bit in IITs. But, you can surely interact with IITians and have good bonds with people, and have a great alumni base including IITians.  You just imagine why would people go for FMS/SIMSREE/DSE etc instead of IIM/KJ/IMT, the reason behind these is just two factors ROI and Placements. Rest you are the best person to decide what suits you the best.Read more

Ques. Which is better in terms of placement and brand value, JBIMS Mumbai or VGSOM IIT Kharagpur?

● Top Answer By Atul Yadav on 23 Jan 21

Ans. Both the colleges are reputed among students and offer decent ROI, a well-connected alumni network, and good placement opportunities. Let’s have an overview for both the colleges one by one. JBIMS: The average package offered went up to Rs.22.84 LPA in 2020 from Rs.20.13 LPA last year. The best package increased to Rs.34.36 LPA in 2020 from Rs.32.30 LPA last year. The median salary increased to Rs.22 LPA in 2020 from the previous year. The course fee for JBIMS is 7-1.52 lakhs.  JBIMS accepts admission through CAT/MH-CET. VGSoM: The average salary rose from Rs.15.50 LPA last year to Rs.23.20 LPA in 2020. The highest pay offered was Rs.20.50 LPA. The median salary increased from Rs.14.76 LPA last year to Rs.16.99 LPA in 2020. VGSoM charges around 10 lakhs for MBA. VGSoM takes admission based on CAT scores. JBIMS Mumbai offers MIMS while VGSoM offers MBA. Both the institutes are good.Read more

Ques. Which would be a better choice for an MBA-IMI/VGSoM?

● Top Answer By Karishma Khatri on 23 Jan 21

Ans. There are some assumptions that help to select any business school. And they're valid for all top business schools at least the top 20. Go through these assumptions and see which B-Schools are closest to them. The table given below shows a detailed overview of the institutes. Particulars IIT Kharagpur VGSoM IMI Median Salary Rs 16.29 LPA Rs 27.5 LPA Entrance Criteria CAT CAT/GMAT Fees Rs. 10,82,000 Rs. 27,00,000 Deciding Factor: Many Business schools today are student-driven businesses and it has nothing to do with anyone else. No other factors such as faculty, infrastructure, knowledge capital do not matter as much. If the infrastructure were the issue then FMS or JBIMS would have been a long way behind. Most of the reputed B-Schools are all about their students, clubs, events, committees, placement drives, etc.  Alumni is one of the most important factors to consider for choosing a B-School. That is why many management institutes like FMS, JBIMS, IMT- GZBD thrives. What activity you are deciding on, in an enterprise college is categorized into clubs and committees, business college events (this one receives you plenty of prize cash too), academics (good academics and accurate CGPA offers better placements). Rankings no longer matter much for the pinnacle 10–15 schools. Placements depend a lot on alumni base and past history. For most business schools the percentage of companies coming back for placement is around 50%. It is all about reinventing the contacts and alumni are the best options for that.  You may hear a certain institute is better for Finance or Marketing. Which is not entirely true. Placement depends on hard work. Go through the factors given above and choose the institute that fits these factors.Read more

Ques. Which college should I join, VGSoM (IIT Kharagpur) or IIM Udaipur considering the IIM tag and ROI (in favor of VGSoM)? I am inclined towards an MBA in marketing.

● Top Answer By Karishma Khatri on 23 Jan 21

Ans. IIM U is the better choice than IIT Kharagpur, especially if you are going for the specialization of Marketing. If the IIM tag is not the only thing you are looking for in your degree, go through the following points to make the right decision. The table given below shows a detailed overview of the between IITs and IIMs Colleges Average Salary IIT Kharagpur Rs. 23.20 LPA IIT Bombay Rs. 20.34 LPA IIT Delhi Rs. 16.00 LPA IIT Madras Rs. 16.10 LPA IIT Kanpur Rs. 15.80 LPA Second Generation IIMs IIM Rohtak Rs. 13.70 LPA IIM Kashipur Rs. 13.82 LPA IIM Trichy Rs. 14.96 LPA IIM Raipur Rs. 15.20 LPA IIM Udaipur Rs. 13.80 LPA IIM Ranchi Rs. 15.11 LPA The IIMs established in 2008 and later are considered the Young/Second Generation IIMs, while those established in and after 2015 are called new IIMs. The third generation IIMs are IIM Amritsar, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Jammu, IIM Nagpur, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Visakhapatnam, IIM Sambalpur.  Comparison: Average CTC- As you will notice from the statistics given, only IIT B, IIT D, and IIT KGP have a better average CTC than the 2nd generation of IIMs. Years of Establishment- The 2nd generation IIMs are only 8-9 years old. Whereas the IIT MBA programs are almost 22 years old. Batch Strength- Compared to the IIT MBA, the 2nd generation IIMs have a larger batch strength. Diverse Peer Group- Other than IIT D and IIT M, none of the IIMs accept Engineers for MBA. Which decreases the diversity in the peer group and in turn peer learning. Pedagogy- IIM focuses on teaching by case studies. This is not the case for an IIT MBA.  Placements- Placements at IIT for MBA is more focused on Operations/IT/Analytics. For example, 45% of the whole batch at IIT KGP was placed in Operations/IT/Analytics, recently. The good thing about 2nd generation IIMs is that despite being new, and the higher batch strength, they offer a better average CTC as compared to IITs. It’s true that the reputed IIT has set up their management department quite well. But in the long run the 2nd generation IIMs will offer more advantages over IITs, just because of the IIM tag.Read more
