Founded in 1931, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is an Institute recognised worldwide for research and Training in Statistics and related Sciences. ISI has its headquarters in Kolkata and other 4 centres are also operating in the cities of Kolkata, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Tezpur. ISI was declared as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India in 1959. 

Indian Institute of Statistics, Kolkata offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Postgraduate Diploma and Research courses.

  • Admission to B. Stat and B.Math is conducted on the basis of the Entrance test conducted by the institution.
  • Postgraduate and Research Admissions are granted on the basis of Entrance Exams and Interviews as well. 
  • Candidates holding a valid score in GATE are exempted from the MS Entrance test. Such candidates will be called directly for the Interview.
  • Research programs are offered in the form of Senior Research Fellowship and Junior Research Fellowship.

Indian Statistical Institute UG and PG Admission 2023

ISI offers B.Stat and B. Math programs at undergraduate levels. The duration of these programs is 3 years. At Postgraduate levels ISI, Kolkata offers M.Stat, M. Math, M.Tech and MS courses in multiple specializations. Duration of these programs is 2 years. Selection Process 

B.Stat/ B.Math: 

Admission will be based on the merit of 2 written test conducted by the institution. Written test comprises of MCQs and descriptive type questions based on Mathematics of 10+2 level. As per the performance in the written tests, selected candidates will be called for interviews.

M.Stat/ M. Math 

  • Students with B.Stat (Hons) degree from ISI are offered direct admission to this programme without any selection test or interview.
  • For other candidates, ISI conducts an entrance exam to assess the applicant. The entrance exam is conducted in the following two parts:
    • Part 1:This part consists of MCQ type questions in Statistics and Mathematics.
    • Part 2: This paper consists of Short-answer type questions in Statistics and Mathematics.

NoteThe questions conducted in examination is of Graduate level.

MS Quantitative Economics

Selection of candidates to this programme will be based on performance in written tests and subsequent interview. The written admission tests will comprise multiple-choice in both Economics and Mathematics at the undergraduate level.

MS in Quality Management Science

Applicants will be selected on the basis of written tests and subsequent interview. The written admission tests will comprise of multiple-choice and/or descriptive questions in Mathematics at the undergraduate level. 

Sponsored Candidates:

  • ISI has a provision for sponsorship by government, semi-government, public sector undertakings, autonomous institutions and commercial/ industrial organizations.
  • Candidates satisfying the eligibility criteria can apply for admission.
  • A candidate would be considered sponsored only if the employer gives him/her leave and full salary for the entire duration of the programme. 
  • Sponsored candidates will not receive any stipend and their sponsors will have to pay a tuition fee of Rs. 20,000/- per year. 

Note: A candidate would be considered sponsored only if he/she is granted leave and full salary by the employer for the entire duration of the 19 Admission 2018-19 programme. Sponsored candidates will not receive any stipend and their sponsors will have to pay a tuition fee of Rs 20,000/- per year.

Master of Science in Library and Information Science: 

Selection of candidates will be based on performance in written tests and subsequent interview.

M.Tech Computer Science

Selection to this program is also based on written test and interview conducted by Indian Statistical Institute.

The written Admission test typically consist of two parts:

  1. Multiple-choice test in Mathematics at the undergraduate level.
  2. Descriptive test comprising the following:

Group A: A test for all candidates in Mathematics at the undergraduate level and in logical reasoning.

Group B: A test, divided into five sections carrying equal marks in Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at the postgraduate level and in Computer Science, Engineering and Technology at the B Tech level. 

Note: Candidates having a valid score in GATE (in required Subject) are exempted from written test. These candidates will be called directly for the interview as per the score in GATE. 

Indian Statistical Institute Ph.D Admission 2023

ISI offers Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) program at doctoral levels. The duration of JRF and SRF program is 6+1 years. Detailed list of research programs are given below:

Selection will be based on Entrance exam conducted by ISI. The entrance exam is further followed by an interview. 

For admission to PhD courses, a candidate will have to fill application form online. The selection to PhD courses is done on the basis of marks scored in the JRF admission test in the relevant discipline conducted by the Institute, a personal interview, and past academic record of the candidate.

Indian Statistical Institute Junior Research Fellowship Admissions 2023

Indian Statistical Institute offers Junior Research fellowship in the following specializations. The eligibility of JRF programs is tabulated below along with specializations.

Selection Process: Subject to satisfying the eligibility criteria, the selection of candidates for JRF is strictly based on merit as judged by their performance in Written Tests and interview. Past academic records may also be taken into consideration.

Note: Candidates who have been awarded a Junior Research Fellowship by NBHM/CSIR/ UGC/ICMR/DST/DBT based on a nationally conducted written Admission Test, are also required to clear the ISI JRF admission test or an equivalent separate test conducted by the relevant JRF selection committee of the institute for submitting the doctoral thesis in ISI for a PhD degree.

How to Apply for Indian Statistical Institute?

Application to the programmes being offered by Indian Statistical Institute must be done online through the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Admission Portal link available at http://www.isical.ac.in/~admission.

  1. Upload the digital copy of the photograph and signature.
  2. Candidates applying under the reserved category are also required to upload the following supporting document(s) for taking the benefit of the reservation policy:
    •  Caste certificates (Scheduled Caste/Schedules Tribes/Other Backward Classes - Non-Creamy Layer) and/or 
    • Disability Certificates issued by the appropriate authority.
  3. Fill the application form correctly and pay an application fee of INR 1250/- (General category)/ INR 625/- (SC/ST/OBC) via SBI Collect/ NetBanking, Debit/ Credit Card or through Challan for cash payment at the SBI Branch.
  4. Candidates fulfilling the eligibility criteria will be called for Entrance exam or interview (as specified above).

Stipends, fellowships and Allowances

  • Non-sponsored candidates are not required to pay any tuition fees for any of the programmes.
  • Stipends are granted in the first instance for one semester/ academic year only and renewed periodically as per students performance.
  • Research Fellows with ME/ M Tech or equivalent will be entitled to enhance junior and senior research fellowships.
