Thiru AGovindasamy Govt Arts College, Tirunelveli was established in the memory of Late. A. Govindsamay the minister of agriculture then. The college was inaugurated by Mr. P. U. Shanmugam, the Minister of Food Industry then. The college started functioning in a temporary building but after 1972, it has been functioning in a permanent structural building built in a vast structure of land measuring 31 Acres. The college is totally governed by the rules framed by the Department of Higher Education, Government of Tamil Nadu.
