Jaipuria Institute of Management Jaipur

Dr. Prabhat Pankaj is the Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. He has experience in teaching economics for thirty years. During these three decades of obtaining knowledge, he has been great guidance to all his students. He has been rewarded by several awards for his accomplishment in research and economics.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“Leading by example and participative decision making is the leadership I prosper”

Jaipuria presents a beautiful example of the learning organization and how collectively it has been able to harp upon innate synergy which seemingly looks far-fetched in the contemporary world of academics. Talking about change, innovation, and adaptation in Jaipuria rests at the center of the thought process, effortlessly pursued and expectantly welcomed. The practices and principles based on collaboration, trust, and humility are easily understood and form part of unwritten leadership culture. I strongly believe in ‘leading by example’ and leadership based on collective wisdom earned by taking people along. Stakeholders’ wellbeing is the ultimate goal of everything we do.

When you first came to Jaipuria Institute of Management, what was your vision for the university and how are you trying to achieve the same?

“Evolution in the educational sector is inevitable and enhances the quality of life”

I took charge as Dean at the institute and later became Director of Jaipur campus in 2013. I started with the vision of making the Jaipur campus grow both in terms of number as well as quality. Today, I am happy that we have been able to add PGDM in Service Management and doctoral level Fellow Program in Management (FPM). The credibility of the Jaipur campus in terms of its acceptability as a quality B-school has grown tremendously over the last 5-6 years. Today, we are awarded Grade 2 autonomy by AICTE and we figure in NIRF ranking consistently over the years.

How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of the institute?

“Students with innovative ways to create awareness among the audience and collaborations for the same”

Our administration model is based on the principles of ‘collective decision making’ and ‘inclusiveness’. An important point to note about Jaipuria Jaipur is that students have active participation in decision making. We have a system of Student Council comprised of 16 committees. The committees in turn have student members. Student Council has representation in all walks of life and management. They tend to lead from the front and their views are counted in decision making. Marketing strategy is more tilted towards using social media platforms and social media presence and ‘word-of-mouth’ publicity. We do use print media as well.

How does the management program differ from the other professional courses?

“Activity-based learning with hands-on skill building for students”

The management program is designed to add value which is both instrumental and intrinsic. It is a holistic framework of development based on developing knowledge, skill, attitude, and habits (in short called KASH). Industry readiness is yet another plank that makes management education different from other professional courses. The education is not just confined to classroom deliberations, rather it goes beyond it. Project-based learning and experiential learning are designed to offer hands-on skill building for students. We have a program called “Life-after-six” wherein a bouquet of activities and platforms has been provided in an informal setup.

How does a management program ensure a practical approach when it is being taught?

“Enhancement of practical knowledge and learning for students with several experiential driven ways”

  • While deciding on curriculum topics of contemporary relevance can be incorporated by seeking advice from industry professionals.
  • The curriculum can be divided into small modules and each module can further be divided into sessions with clear learning objectives and pedagogy.
  • In Jaipuria, 10% of courses must be delivered by industry professionals.
  • Assessments based on group work, experiential learning, fieldwork, market survey, etc. can be preferred.
  • Approaches such as case-based teaching, data-based learning, exploration would go a long way in ensuring practical knowledge.

What do you think of your role and responsibilities to the university and the students are?

“To provide the best career prospect to all the students associated with the institute”

As the Director, I take full responsibility for every aspect and functioning of the institute with a focus that the credibility of the institute raises over time. Jaipuria is a mission-driven institute and the director works as the custodian of its mission and vision. Our focus is to generate value for all our stakeholders. Student success is the core motive behind everything we do. This speaks volumes about the conducive work and learning culture of the institute which is based on trust and transparency.

Tell us about your experience in higher education and what makes it the best industry to work in?

“The opportunities to learn new every segment of time and being able to share it with several to enrich their future”

I am in education by choice. It has always fascinated me to work with students and intellectuals. The sole objective of my engagement in education is the advancement of youth through helping and guiding them to succeed in life and career. I strongly believe in innovation and creativity and never moved away from experimenting with new ideas. Education is the most profound profession as it keeps one engaged with learning. Learning is the gateway, not only for a better career and livelihood but also for a happy and satisfied life.
