What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“Providing exposure to short-term trainings and placement opportunities”

Conducting workshops and training on recent and emerging technologies that keep students aware and motivated on Industrial expectations and directions to focus their careers are my prime responsibilities as a head. UG/PG students are involved in research projects and are benefitted by gaining research exposure and knowledge that can be used in their careers in the future. Initiatives have been adopted to identify slow learners in the department and special classes have been conducted to improve their performance as well. Additional impetus for finding correct placement and Internship opportunities in various Industries, along with backing their skills through mock interviews and specialized training is what I look at in the Institute.

What are some of the best practices in the course you’re offering?

“Establishing industry oriented practices and centers of expertise”

We are offering the latest programs like Application of Sensing and Analysis, DSP Algorithm and Application, Machine Learning, etc. that are designed to give students industrial experience in academics. A portion of the curriculum is delivered by industry professionals themselves including seminars by experts to address current and future technologies. We also involve the students in various activities under different professional societies like IEEE, IETE and encourage them for research paper publications. We, at the institute level, have various Centers of Excellences like Center for Antenna and Radio Frequency Systems (CARFS), Center for Imaging Technology (CIT), Center for Advanced Materials Technology (CAMT), Center for Cyber Physical Systems (CCPS) and so on. Consultancy projects have been taken up in different domains by most of the faculty and students are given opportunities to be part of such projects.

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

“Inculcating research knowledge and best industrial practices”

We train our students in doing Mini Projects related to the subjects they learn and have integrated labs for advanced subjects, apart from their regular course labs. We motivate and help the students to publish papers in various journals of national repute like SCOPUS Indexed journals, IEEE proceedings, Web of Science, Elsevier etc. We offer project participation, tutorials for numerical subjects, internships in reputed industries; alumni talk sessions, workshops and technical talks, etc. to enhance students’ skills and train them for the future. Under various IEEE and IETE student chapters like Communication Society, Antenna and Propagation Society, Signal Processing etc., numerous activities are conducted on a regular basis.

How did you train your faculty to deliver this program to the students?

“Involving them more research activities and training programs”

Faculty Development programs are conducted regularly in-house on various emerging technologies to update faculty knowledge that will be helpful in training our students towards research activities. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in training conducted by other reputed Industries, academic Institutions and defense organizations which will further be delivered to all our students. Incentives are given to the faculty by the college for quality publications where students are also involved, thereby motivating research and publications. Various training programs are held for writing research proposals and applying research funded projects for the teachers, along with working with industries through Consultancies on various projects. My faculty and I, myself, have received funding towards research projects from various reputed funding agencies like DST, BIRAC, VGST, AICTE, and so on.

What are the career options after pursuing the course you’re offering?

“On par industrial projects and domain placement in core industries”

As Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering is very significant in today’s date; plenty of opportunities are available for students to work in their careers like 5G, IOT, Wireless Communications, Networking, and so on. Also, there is a huge scope to work on research areas which meet the socio-economic needs from Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering perspective. It also provides a good base for higher studies and various Interdisciplinary activities in the field.

How do you strategize the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

“Regular upgradation and collaboration with Industrial experts”

Every year the curriculum is reviewed by experts from Industries and research organizations to ensure the right content is provided to the student. From fundamentals to recent advancements in various technologies are provided to students, so that they can perform well in their careers. Many Industry experts are part of the BOS and Department Advisory committees; their suggestions are incorporated for continuous improvement of curriculum. Partial delivery of the syllabus (around 25-30%) in most of the subjects in every semester is done by experts from reputed industries like ISRO, LRDE, SAMSUNG, L&T etc. so that our students will know how the subjects they are being taught are applied in industries. This gives an opportunity for students to interact with the industry experts for their projects, internships, etc. as well.

How does your department prepare students for Higher education?

“Guiding students with ongoing industry focused activities”

Students are encouraged to inculcate research knowledge in carrying out their projects and this, in turn, motivates them to pursue their higher studies in the various streams. Many training and Invited talks are conducted regularly for the students to help them in their placements on various aspects like programming languages, leadership activities, and various other domains. We provide various assignments which build up their confidence such as technical talks, group discussions, team work which is required in an industrial environment. The highly facilitated laboratories and Centers for Excellence give an extra edge to work on various projects which help students to choose their streams for higher studies. Students are trained to create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations. Students are also trained to apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations within your Institute?

“Improving interactions and tackling problems”

Faculty have direct interactions with students regularly, this helps remove any barriers in approaching faculty at any point of time to discuss curriculum, career advice, etc. Students are encouraged to participate in various project competitions and thus interact with faculty closely and establish relations. They also participate in lab activities with the faculty and maintain a good rapport to conduct research work in the ongoing trends following industrial revolution 4.0. Addressing student’s problems personally, guiding our students to better careers ahead and supporting them for their new ideas are helpful in better communication and interaction among individuals.

What valuable advice would you like to give to the students?

“Put in your efforts and learn variety of skills”

Students should utilize all the efforts put in by the faculty towards student’s development. They should work hard and give their best in their careers to prosper as responsible citizens of our country who can lead the nation in a very good way. Many other aspects like ethics, leadership qualities, debates, English speaking, etc. must also be looked after to perform well in the career and personal life.
