Markham College of Commerce, Hazaribagh

Dr. Bimal Mishra is the Principal at Markham College of Commerce, Hazaribagh. Having worked in various notable institutions prior to becoming a Principal, his ideology revolves around adapting and learning best practices to be on the top. He advises students to explore different domains in order to build a strong foundation and prosper further. Read here what he has to say in his interview.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Adapting and learning best practices in the educational system are an essential element”

I started my career as a Lecturer in the Mathematics Group at BITS, Pilani, and served there for almost a decade. What I learned was the exchange of experience between Teachers. It is required today in nearly all educational institutes for building a healthy environment. When I switched to BIT, Mesra, Ranchi, and spent there for a decade or more with a given responsibility as a teacher, researcher, and education administrator, one thing that attracted me was cultural intelligence. Cultural intelligence is a tool, which can increase an individual’s ability to interact with people outside his/her culture.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“There are multiple qualities a leader must possess to be effective”

Switching from a Private sector to a Government educational sector was a new challenge. However, as a Dean of Students’ Welfare of BIT, Mesra, Ranchi enriched my leadership quality.

  1. In the education sector, the educational administrator must have a vision and must articulate it very clearly.
  2. He must be transparent and act in a fair and justified manner.
  3. There must not be any communication gap and communication should be prompt, and a leader must listen to the concerns and ideas of subordinates.
  4. Leaders must have high ethical standards.

How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your school?

“Students should be given a space to explore various verticals”

Students are your brand ambassadors. During their educational stay, emphasis must be to make them a good human resource. The bookish knowledge can develop their overall personality, but their sense of responsibility must be explored. Responsibility towards the society, enhancing their entrepreneur skills, sharpening their technical skills (active participation in technical festivals), making them culturally sound (active participation in cultural festivals of the college), and their hidden talent should be given an appropriate platform. For the overall development of the students, every educational institute must have different clubs/societies, viz. dramatics club, music club, literary culture, photographic society, fine arts club, and technical clubs.

What do you think should be the University’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“Establishing good industry links of prime importance”

Academia-Industry linkage must be one of the top priorities of any educational institute. It not only enhances the students’ real-life exposure but also provides them job opportunities. Every student (technical or non-technical) must be allowed to undergo project work for a reasonable amount of time in the industry and must be credited..

What are some plans that you’re currently (or will be) designing in the near future?

“There are plans for the future requirement and successful implementation of strategies”

  1. E-content development of the project under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology. .
  2. Lecture notes and video lectures of the faculty members to be uploaded to the college website. Also, bringing in a sufficient number of smart classrooms, e-library.
  3. The digitalization of College Management system, e-governance, implementation of Enterprise resource planning (ERP), the functioning of Swayam & Swayamprabha, MOOCs.
  4. Setting up Centres for Preservation and Promotion of Endangered Languages, Establishment of Centre for Fostering Social Responsibility and Community Engagement.
