How tough is branch sliding in NIT Raipur?
The number of seats available for branch sliding in NIT Raipur has been very few, in recent years. So, it's difficult to change the branch as most of the seats get occupied through the 7 rounds of JOSAA and 2 rounds of CSAB. Seats available for branches like CSE and ECE are the lowest. Due to the limited number of seats, competition is high for branch change. Students need around 9.6 CPI to get a good branch.
How are the placements of chemical engineering at NIT Raipur?
NIT Raipur released its final placement report for the batch of 2019-2020. According to which, out of 48 eligible students from the Chemical Engineering branch, 38 got placement offers.
However, the placements in Chemical Engg. Department has enhanced a lot in the past few years. There are various companies that offer almost 6 LPA.

When it comes to choosing between IIIT-NR and NIT Raipur, it's recommended to go with NIT Raipur for the following reasons:
- IIITs are undoubtedly among the best institutions in the country for providing ECE and CSE courses. However, IIIT-NR is a relatively new and small college with a smaller college strength.
- IIIT-NR lacks well-established clubs, committees, and Training and Placement offices, which can be a disadvantage for students.
- On the other hand, NIT Raipur is an old and established college with strong alumni support, numerous events, and a well-equipped Placement cell. Being a part of cultural, technical, or managerial events can help students enhance their skills and network with industry experts.
- While NIT Raipur may appear old and dusty, it has a proven track record of successful placements and a sure future for its students.
- It's always better to go for a sure future than to take a risk with a not-so-sure future.
Therefore, if you have the choice between IIIT-NR and NIT Raipur, it's recommended to choose NIT Raipur for a better chance at a successful career.
What is the dress code for first year in NIT Raipur?
There is no such dress code for first-year students. However, you are asked to wear formals during practical exams and on occasions like function/party.
On the other hand, there are lots of restrictions on the dress code of girls.
- Girls are not allowed to go outside wearing sleeveless tops, capris, shorts, skirts, etc. from the hostel.
- Only full ankle trousers, leggings, pajamas, jeans are allowed while going out of premises.
For boys, there are no such restrictions but that doesn’t allow them to walk in shorts in premises.
To be more accurate every day students wear jeans and T-shirt on a normal basis. Yes, sometimes seniors do expect you to be in formals and you should listen to them. But so far there are no rules for specifically wearing formals. You can wear what you feel comfortable in.

What is the average package in NIT Raipur for Mechanical engineering?
As far as the placement reports say, placement for mechanical engineering in NIT Raipur varies in between 70%-80%. Although the placements are not as high as IT/CSE branch when compared with mechanical engineering. But yes, there is a most essential perk of job security in the mechanical engineering branch which most of today’s software companies and startups lack.
Now moving from core to non-core campus visitors in the fields of Software & Analytics for all the branches, the package offered is usually very low around 3.5–5 LPA.
- The automobile companies like Maruti Suzuki India Limited, Tata Motors, and Fiatwhich visit NIT Raipur for campus placements all give packages more or less between 5.5–6 LPA.
- Vedanta Resources do provide a better package than automobiles but their package includes a large amount of variable pay which depends on individual as well as company performance.
- So in the long run they are paid more or less the same as automobile placed people get.
- PSUs like Coal India Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) which visit NIT Raipur are among those few ones who actually increase the average by providing a very good pay scale of 10–12 LPA.
Some companies like BPCL AND HPCL have strict rules of allowing only topper of some branches to appear for the placements. Whereas Coal India does not have vacancies for mechanical every year.
Though, the job openings for Mechanical Engineers are always there. This is a reason why Mechanical is called an evergreen branch. Moreover, placements everywhere on the country’s economic situation.
Don't go for placement packages, it may disappoint you. Just keep a good CPI and be conceptually strong, you will surely end up in good companies like Tata and Maruti.
My rank in the JEE mains is 50000. Should I go for the chemical branch in NIT Raipur?
My brother recently graduated from NIT Raipur as a chemical engineer. He got placed in Vedanta Resources with a salary package of around 8 LPA.
Here are some pros and cons about choosing the institute which may help you.
Pros:
- The Chemical Engineering branch at NIT Raipur is very interesting.
- NIT Raipur is growing in all aspects, be it infrastructure, hostel facilities, laboratories, or placements.
- The institution follows the internal sliding procedure and hence, you can change to your branch of choice after the third semester. You just need to score a decent CGPA which is quite easy.
- Even if there is difficulty in placements of the core branches, having a good CGPA/ being an avid puzzler/ good at aptitude will definitely help you in getting placed. For boys, it is even easier since they are preferred over girls in the core sector jobs.
- There is no compulsory attendance guideline.
- You can easily take out time for self-study or coaching if you have plans for higher studies.
Cons:
- The professors are good but most of them do not provide ample time to the students.
- It is difficult to score a CGPA above 9 because the professors of the chemical engineering department are strict unlike the professors of other departments.
- The branch does not ensure 100% placement. It is difficult to get a core job.
- The laboratory lacks the best instruments and facilities.
- You will have to study intensively for a few subjects every semester.
Since your rank is 50000, it is doubtful whether you will have better choices to opt for. It is always better to go for a government college than a private college even if you go for a branch other than CS or IT.
If chemical engineering interests you, you will enjoy it in NIT Raipur but if you wish to go for some other branch, you can drop a year and reappear for the entrance exam.
Is it a mistake to choose NIT Raipur over PEC?
It is not a mistake because of the college environment, which is very competitive in addition to very good placement. Many mechanical engineering students have been placed in various PSUs, with pay packages of nearly 14 LPA. Additionally, many students have topped competition exams such as GATE, CAT, GRE, IES, and so on. Students are very involved in robotics events and automobile racing. Students have a great opportunity to work in top automobile companies such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Honda, TVS Motors, and Hero Corporations, which are all big dreams for mechanical engineering students. Because it is located in Chhattisgarh's industrial area, various cement and steel industries visit the campus, providing enormous opportunities regardless of college rankings as shown on the Internet.
According to media reports, the highest package recorded during NIT Raipur placements in 2022 was INR 2 crore per annum for the NIT Raipur CSE. Facebook provided the most generous package. Previously, the NIT Raipur average package in 2021 was INR 9.7 LPA.
