My SAT score is 1850. Can I get admission to NIT, Surathkal in the IT branch?

AP
Arun Pal Posted On : March 23rd, 2021
B.Tech Information Technology, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

Firstly, congratulations on scoring this in SAT. The grading here is quite relative. Normally, the state toppers, IIT 3000-8000 rankers, 96% to 98% CBSE scorers will be your immediate competition with your rank of 1850. Although, there are good chances that you might have to wait for a few rounds to finish and then maybe in the third or fourth round you might get lucky.

The rank mentioned by you here is quite a fair enough rank. It is also advised here that you have a look at SAT scores as well for the past academic year. There is a slight trend that the scores might vary every year depending on overall performance of all applicants.

Since much shuffling and reshuffling takes place in all the branches including IT in all the admission rounds, it is worthwhile that you wait a longer and try in the third (or fourth) round of counseling.

How is Chemical Engineering at NIT Surathkal?

RG
Reshmi Ghosh Posted On : March 23rd, 2021
Studied Chemical Engineering & Mathematics at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP) (2019)

My brother graduated from NIT Surathkal, with bachelors in chemical engineering and hence I could give you quite a relatable experience.

To be clear, chemical engineering is not like studying chemistry. There is only 20% of chemistry and the rest is all physics. You might also want to do your own little research for further understanding of the branch what subjects it entails. There is no point in me mentioning all the curriculum details here.

The basic point here that I’m trying to make is that if you are fond of solving intricate problems in the petroleum and pharmaceutical industry, chemical engineering is the right fit for you.

The placements here are well known and historic. Apart from the handful of students who wished to pursue their higher studies, all the other students in the batch were quite well placed. Therefore, you can stop worrying about the placements from now on.

The only minor concern here is with the professors. Apart from a few professors who are quite old, the others are not quite impressive. They care less for students’ ability to understand complex matters and subjects.

Is it worth studying civil engineering in NIT surathkal?

PS
Priyadarshini Sen Posted On : March 23rd, 2021
B.Tech Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2020)

The curriculum and faculty of NITK civil engineering is one of the most premium ones. The course is well articulated. This particular department makes you fall in love with the branch as well as the college on the whole.

The atmosphere and the overall environment of the department brings about a lot of exposure, freedom and learning opportunities to the students. It is all thanks to the friendly and welcoming nature of the faculty here that the students on campus have established American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Chapter. This is of national importance. This is a technical society which has groomed and helped a number of aspiring civil engineers. There are a number of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities happening throughout the year which inculcate leadership qualities and much more.

The scope after becoming a civil engineer in today’s world is endless. With the increasing use of drones and smart phones for image processing techniques to keep a check on structural health, post disaster analysis and real time progress of the ongoing construction projects, professionals and experts from all the fields like civil engineering, IT, computer science etc. are always in demand.

No student has ever regretted the decision of choosing civil engineering in NITK.

When it comes to choosing between two good institutes, it can be a tough decision to make. However, there are certain factors that you need to consider in order to make an informed decision.

  • Consider your paying capacity as both institutes have a high fee structure
  • Evaluate your branch of preference as both offer a wide range of courses but may not have the same specializations
  • Your state of domicile can also play a role in your decision-making process, as you may be eligible for state quotas
  • Assess your way of living and comfort level with the environment, as IIIT Allahabad is located in a small town and BITS Goa is located in a coastal town with a vibrant atmosphere.

Ultimately, the decision to choose between IIIT Allahabad and BITS Goa should be based on your individual preferences and priorities. You need to carefully consider all the factors mentioned above and choose the institute that aligns with your career aspirations and personal goals.

Since NITK is a well-established and popular college, doing M.Tech from here will always be worth it. The curriculum is coherent and very specific.

Not to mention about the beautiful infrastructure of the place. NITK is the only college in India to have its own beach and that is a major attraction spot for many applicants. It creates a very serene spot for academic and personal growth of an individual.

It offers a good learning and growing exposure to the students undergoing M. Tech studies and a worthwhile placement coverage as well. It holds good records of placements in top MNCs across the globe with a lot of respectable packages.

Is NIT Surathkal better than IIT Roorkee

PP
Pratik Parikh Posted On : April 11th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

It would be unfair to make a comparison between NIT Surathkal and lIT Roorkee, as both institutions have their own strengths and reputations. Yet if I were asked to choose one, I would have definitely gone for IIT Roorkee as it is at a whole different level from NIT Surathkal.

Here are a few reasons that justify my claim:

  • IIT Roorkee ranks 6 among other IITs
  • It is Asia's oldest Engineering college
  • You get the tag of being an IITian
  • It has an extensive alumni network owing to its early establishment

The only condition under which I would recommend you choose NIT Surathkal over IIT Roorkee is when you are getting CSE at NIT and Metallurgy at IIT Roorkee. Else, choosing IIT Roorkee over NIT Surathkal will always be a wise decision.
