Should I choose mechanical or civil engineering?
Mechanical and Civil Engineering are core branches of engineering and both offer good future prospects. You should choose one according to your interest.
- Both Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering require good knowledge of Applied and Material Physics. If you are interested in Physics, you should consider other branches of engineering.
- Even though the base of these branches is Physics, the syllabus differs widely. So you should take a look at the syllabus for both branches before choosing one.
- Talk to the people who are currently working in these domains and get to know what exactly they are doing. This can help you a lot to select the right course for you.
- It will be better if you take a look at the M.Tech syllabuses for both branches as well. This will clear your vision in case you want to pursue higher studies in the future.
- You will get decent job opportunities from either of these branches. There are govt sector jobs as well as the private sector.
So, factor in all these points and see what interests you more.
Have I done a mistake in choosing IIT Delhi mechanical over DTU CS? I preferred to do CS, but due to ego, I chose IIT Delhi.

He made the most of his campus life and kept struggling to switch his branch and eventually succeeded. That being said, you have made the right decision as only IIT Delhi can give you the right set of opportunities and exposure and not DTU.
Which is better for mechanical engineering - the NIT in Calicut or BITS Goa?
If you are fine with the higher fee structure of BITS Goa, then it will be a better choice for you. The infrastructure of both colleges is similar to each other but the alumni network is better at BITS Goa compared to NIT Calicut.
But if you are interested in mechanical engineering and want to pursue it as your passion, then you should probably choose NIT Calicut. The placement records of the Mechanical department in core companies are better at NIT Calicut. The average package offered is also higher than BITS Goa. How are the mechanical placements at SVNIT Surat?
Placement at SVNIT Surat is great as informed by some of my friends studying there. Here are the recent placement highlights for SVNIT Surat.
- The highest package offered here is 37.50 LPA while the average CTC ranges from 4-7 LPA.
- In order to get a placement to try to secure a CGPA pointer of above 6.5 by the end of your degree. It's safe if your CGPA is 7 and above. One of the best ways is to do that, get a good pointer in the first year (8 and above), and then continue to secure above 6.5 to keep it above 7.
- Try to gain all your basic knowledge in all the mechanical subjects on point. This will surely help you out in technical interviews.
- If you truly have the interest but don't have a good CGPA pointer, then it will be very hard to qualify for placements, and you will regret it later on. Students with marks 60% above can apply, but the final shortlist will only have people with marks above 65%-70% depending on the people applied.
- Participate in a decent amount of co-curricular activities. You need to make sure that you know a lot about the core concepts about the subjects of your interest.
Obviously, the placements are great because of the NIT tag, but it will be of no use if you hold a second-class degree, with a lot of back papers. So, I would like to advise you to just focus on your studies.
Is it possible for a student studying Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur to get placed in a decent coding company?
Honestly, a true coding lover needs not to worry too much about placements. They should just be good in what they do and certainly, an opportunity will come their way.
Let’s explain this through an example of a friend who was a graduate of Industrial Engineering and Management, IIT Kharagpur, and is currently in Amazon as a Software Development Engineer.
Owing to his Industrial Background, he faced backlash initially and couldn’t sit for placements in big companies like Adobe, Google, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs. He then came across a startup company - BankBazaar that visited the campus on the 2nd day of placements and also had a coding test. He passed the test with flying Colors and
for the first offer during that placement season.
Ever since then, he started receiving calls from top companies like Amazon, Google, Walmart Labs, etc. He soon joined Amazon and worked for a few years. Recently, he got a call from Goldman Sachs HR for the Goldman Sachs, Strategic Group. This came as a surprise since this company only prefers toppers from IITs and IIMs. It was his dream job to make mathematical models and program them. Fortunately, all his interviews went pretty well and in the end, he was introduced to the Managing Director of the Finance Division, at Goldman Sachs. who conducted a discussion on the projects he would be working on.
After experiencing almost 3 years in the Software Industry, my friend only advised coding lovers to focus solely on their passions and let the world find them.
Which is better: Mech in IIT Madras or CSE in NIT Trichy?
The choice of the branch, as well as the Institute, depends on a lot of factors like your personal preferences and the other options you have. It’s difficult to say which is better between the Mechanical Engineering program at IIT Madras and CSE at NIT Trichy, as both are highly reputable institutions with strong engineering programs. Both offer excellent curricula, experienced faculty, and ample opportunities for research and extracurricular activities.
Joining NIT Trichy for CSE is a good choice if
- You are more interested in computer science and software development
- If you are only after the CS roles and placements. The placements of this branch are pretty good at NIT Trichy with the average package at INR 17-24 LPA and placement rate at 98-100%.
- If you want to pursue higher studies in MS
Joining IIT Madras for Mechanical Engineering is a good choice if
- You are looking for an amazing campus life and the IIT tag
- You are open to non-core jobs because core Mechanical jobs are average.
- If you want to start a career in CS by learning to code or taking minor courses in CS
Some other options to consider are
- CSE at IIIT Hyderabad or new IITs
- ECE at IIT Guwahati
- EE at IIT Hyderabad
All these have average packages above 20 LPA and are excellent options. The preference order for branches on the basis of job prospects and the current demands in the market is as follows
CSE > M&C > ECE > EE
All these branches are open to software profiles whereas other branches usually offer non-core profiles even Mechanical. Ultimately, it's important to research both programs and consider your own interests and goals before making a decision.
Which one is better: taking mechanical engineering at IIT BHU or civil engineering in IIT Roorkee?
The choice of the branch is always yours to make. People can advise you on the same but to make the best decision you will have to determine your area of interest and look up the fields you are choosing from. It’s a very crucial decision and needs to be taken after much thought.
IIT Roorkee Civil Engineering
- One of the best branches of IIT Roorkee.
- It has one of the best research facilities.
- The campus life is lively and you can avail many facilities.
IIT BHU Mechanical Engineering
- This is one of the strictest departments in India and makes you question your own potential and abilities.
- Professors are very strict and the coursework is extremely rigorous with assignments and projects meant to be completed within a day.
- Students are given the freedom to a considerable extent to choose their electives.
- The placement scenario is decent with 85% of students getting placed.

Ultimately, the choice of the branch and institute both are matters of personal preference and should be given due consideration.
What is the average salary for Mechanical and Instrumentation & control engineering at NIT Trichy. Do the students get chance to participate in IT placements
The Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering at NIT Trichy has fifteen permanent faculty members with teaching and research interests that cover a broad range of fields. The department consists of six well-equipped laboratories which are attached to the curriculum development. Additional four research-oriented labs are present in the department. All laboratories are very well established with adequate facilities.
Instrumentation and control engineering is a diverse field and offers scope in various fields. ICE at NIT Trichy enjoys placement good enough to be considered in top 5 branches. As a student of ICE, you can choose between software, electronics, core instrumentation, and management jobs. If you are looking for monetary statistics, you are in the wrong place. IIT Kanpur does not release branch-wise placement statistics.
Packages hardly depend on the branch. Your performance throughout the 4 years and your small and big achievements determine the kind of packages you are offered.
Infact, even a CS student shouldn’t expect great packages if his grades are below average and he has not worked hard and gained knowledge and skills. Even Sundar Puchar was a metallurgy BTech student but today is the CEO of Google.
