Kautilya School of Public Policy of GITAM, Hyderabad has organized a talk on ‘Policy formulation: The Chanakya Approach’ by Prof. K.S.Vijayaragavan on Friday in association with GITAM School of Humanities & Social Sciences (GSHS). Dr Vijayaragavan is an Emeritus Professor, Visiting professor at Tokyo University and was the former Advisor Logistics to the PMO, Government of India.

In this talk, he has explored Kautilya's Arthashastra: The book, the sutras and the mode of teaching and its overview. He emphasized the ten mantras of Chanakya and their meaning, 1. Sukhasya moolam Dharmah (The basis of “sukha” or all true pleasantness is “dharma” or righteous conduct) 2. Dharmasya moolam Arthah (“dharma” is “artha” or wealth) 3. Arthasya moolam Rajyam (“artha” is “rajya” or the State) 4. Rajyasya moolam Indriya Jayah (the stability of the State lies in control over the “indriya” or sense faculties providing pleasure) 5. Indriyajayasya moolam Vinayah (control over the sensual faculties is in “vinay” or humility) 6. Vinayasya moolam Vruddhopasevah (humility is devotion to those grown old through wisdom) 7. Vruddhopasevaya Vijnanam (Through devotion to the wise, one attains proficiency with the maximum efficiency) 8. Vijnanena atmaanam Sampadyet (It is imperative for all the functionaries of the State to perform their duties with the maximum efficiency) 9. Samapaditatma jitatmama Bhavati (To perform State duties with maximum efficiency, the functionaries of the State must learn to control their sensual needs, and maximize their internal potential) 10. Jitatma sarvarthe Sanyujyate (Those who have vanquished their baser selves will become prosperous naturally, can retain their prosperity, and (will) be successful in their endeavours)

Prof. Vijayaragavan explained that Arthashastra deals thoroughly with the qualities and disciplines needed for a king to rule his subjects more expeditiously. According to Kautilya, he explained that a King is one who: Has self-control, having conquered the unfriendly temptations of the senses, Cultivates the intellect by consulting with elders, Keeps his eyes open and stays updated through spies, Is always active in promoting the protection and welfare of the folks, Ensures the speculation of the themes of their Dharma by authority and example, Improves his own discipline by enhancing his learning in all branches of knowledge; and Endears himself to his subjects by enriching them.

‘For a trained intellect pursues yoga because from yoga comes self-control. Only a king, who is smart, disciplined, dedicated to a just governing of the subjects & aware of the welfare of all beings, can get pleasure from the world unopposed’ Dr Vijayaragavan said.

While spoken about India-China border dispute at Ladakh, he elaborated that it’s a policy failure of China, it never taken action before policy formation. He has answered many quarries raised by the students. Prof. VVV Nagendra Rao, Director, GSHS and Sridhar Pabbisetty, Founding Director, Kautilya School of Public Policy have felicitated the guest.

SmartIDEATHON - 2021

Date: March 15, 2021

GITAM Venture Development Centre (VDC), with support from E- Club, is rolling out the second round of their acclaimed SmartIDEATHON-2021, across all its three campuses in Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, informed by GITAM VDC Director Leben Johnson.

Smart ideas can be from any domain that can be submitted at http://vdc.gitam.edu/smartidea. The application process is open from Monday 8th March 2021 for three weeks until 28th March 2021. This is open nationally for anyone with an idea that can make a difference. The ideas can come from students, employees or budding start-ups, not necessarily that the applicant needs to be part of GITAM. All we ask is to have an interdisciplinary team of minimum 3 people who can complement each other’s skill sets and promote diversity. Shortlisted applicants will have to pitch their ideas as a team to a panel. Hope to have the pitching sessions in-house at GITAM campuses, however if lockdown prevails, teams can opt to have the pitching session online.

VDC is now excited to roll out the second round of SmartIDEATHON-2021, which is going to be even more fun-filled with great pitches. This is a perfect opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to listen to the other pitches, learn and position themselves on the path to success. One of the most important traits of a successful entrepreneur is to have their eyes and ears open to what goes around them, listen to the best ideas, be open to feedback, improve or pivot their ideas to meet a latent need that a certain segmented audience is deprived of. Such ideas have customer acceptance, which needless to say leads to better Venture Capital funding. The finalist will also get access to Northeastern University’s Ready-Set-Go program for free and can use the state-of-the-art pre-incubation and incubation facility of VDC that is coming up. GITAM has also set aside Gap/Seed funding to help budding start-ups in their prototype building. A new Section-8 company is also being registered to help channelize this process.

GITAM has partnered with Northeastern University (NU) Boston, to provide their entrepreneurial expertise to the students of GITAM and to the community at large. This partnership which started in late 2019, was instrumental in offering their tried and tested NU-IDEA programs to our students. SmartIDEA is one such venture ideation competition that we started in 2020. Last year we had more than 123 ideas of which 70 were shortlisted to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges, from which 18 teams were selected for the Grand Finale that saw three teams being awarded the accolades. The winning three teams were “Hearing Through Teeth”, “Deltanow” and “Hydrogravitricity”. We are proud to acknowledge that the accolades for these three teams did not stop there. “Hearing Through Teeth”, went on to get selected as the best idea in the ASSOCHAM South India pitching competition in 2020. Deltanow was the First runners-up of Entrepreneurial Organization, Global Student Entrepreneur Awards for AP. Hydrogravitricity won the Tirutsava B-Plan contest organised by the TiE Andhra Pradesh chapter at IIT- Tirupati.

Ph.D. to a GITAM Scholar

GITAM Ph.D.

DateOctober 6, 2019

Mrs. Prasanthi Modugula, Research Scholar, Department of Mathematics has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from GITAM Deemed-to-be University. She will be awarded the degrees at the X Convocation to be held in GITAM, Hyderabad Campus.

Ms. Prasanthi did her research thesis titled, “Finite Element Analysis of transient MHD flow over an Inclined Porous Plate” under the supervision of Dr. Siva Reddy Sheri, Associate Professor, School of Science, GITAM. Prof. Y.N.Reddy, Department of Mathematics, NIT Warangal was the external examiner.

A brief of thesis: This thesis emphasizes finite element analysis of transient MHD flow over an inclined porous plate. A mathematical model in terms of unsteady, nonlinear and coupled partial differential equations under various boundary conditions which governs the realistic physical flow have been rendered in a dimensional form. It is then transformed into a dimensionless form with an appropriate set of non-dimensional variables. There exist several classical variational methods that are not competitive computationally due to complexity in constructing the approximation function. Therefore, the most powerful, computer-oriented, cost-effective, versatile and robust numerical scheme namely the Galerkin Finite Element Method with a weighted residual approach and two-node linear element approximate functions is adopted for computing the numerical solutions. The Maxwell-Garnetts model for thermal conductivity, Brinkman model for dynamic viscosity and Rosseland diffusion approximation for the thermal radiative heat flux model is adopted for formulating the problems. The obtained numerical results for physical governing parameters on the velocity, temperature and concentration distributions in the boundary layer regime are exemplified graphically and tabulated quantitatively. Validation with earlier perturbation computations in the literature is conducted with present finite element solutions. In a fast-changing world, he predicted, about 30-40% of currently existing jobs will disappear, making it all the more necessary for the undergraduates to work on their skills. He articulated four ingredients to success: Skills, Perseverance/Grit, Sacrifice, and a broader perspective on life.

The acquisition of skills has become more important now than ever. Students must actively and continuously learn new skills and knowledge about themselves. Invoking Greek Stoic philosophy, Shri Asvin advised them to adopt a never-give-up attitude. Sacrifices are essential in the direction of one’s goals, so one’s goals should be clear. He cautioned them; however, that money in itself can never be a goal.

He added one should view life from a broader perspective and should not be deterred by temporary setbacks. Say, ‘this too shall pass.’ He suggested that they adopt strategic patience and define success in their way and pursue that.

In his address, Shri Abhilash Mishra, CEO, NSE Academy, took the students through the journey of the National Stock Exchange. He urged the students to learn the skills required for the 21st Century, and bridge the skill gap between education and jobs.

GITAM HBS is collaborating with NSE Academy to offer BBA (Financial Markets). Shri Rohit Mohan, Specialist, Markets-India, CIMA, congratulated the students for their choice and advised them to prepare for an uncertain world. GITAM HBS is collaborating with CIMA to offer BBA (Management Accounting). Shri Prashant Jawanjal, Regional Manager- South, ACCA, recounted the collaboration of ACCA with GITAM, in providing B.Com (Hons.). He advised the students to acquire professional skills during their studies to have the edge over others. Shri Melvin Anthony, Regional Manager, Business Relationship, ISDC, spoke about the successful collaboration they have with GITAM HBS in offering resources for both CIMA and ACCA certifications.
