Fakir Chand College is mainly an undergraduate liberal arts college near Kolkata, India. The college was founded by Jagadish Chandra Halder in memoriam of his father Fakir Chand Halder.
•    It is affiliated with the University of Calcutta. 
•    It has almost 100 teachers (50 full-time & 50 part-time/guest/ visiting faculty), 40 support staff and 4500 students. 
•    It is the oldest and largest college in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
•    Fakir Chand College stands today in Diamond Harbour (45 km from Kolkata), in the southern part of West Bengal. 
•    It is the culmination of the vision of one man to bring higher education facilities to the people of this area.
•    The college is also listed for grants under the 2(f) & 12(B) scheme of the University Grants Commission, Govt. of India.
•    Fakir Chand College has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India (NAAC)
Department
The college offers different courses in the subjects like General Science, Science, Commerce, and many more. There are two departments in this college, Department of Science and Department of Arts. The different departments of this college are offering different courses in B.A. B.Sc, B.Com.

 



The college is best known for its academic excellence. The organization aims at teaching the young and dynamic students in order to making them fit to face the challenges of 21st century. The college excels in academics with the excellent performance of the students year after year. The college offers honors degree in many subjects.
•    It started with Intermediate Courses in Arts and Science. Undergraduate courses in Arts were introduced in the year 1955-56. 
•    Undergraduate courses in Science and Commerce, and the B.Ed. course were introduced in the years 1958-66.
•    Under the able leadership of the present principal Dr.Subires Bhattacharyya (joined April,2005),the college was accredited by the NAAC & the NCTE and three M.A. courses had been introduced. 
•    The College now has 19 honours (Under-Graduate) courses in Arts, Science & Commerce, a teacher training course (B. Ed) and three Post- Graduate (M.A.) courses in History, Education and Bengali. 
•    An eye remains on the economic and social exigencies in the introduction and conduct of courses. 
•    University results in different streams are quite satisfactory and a good number of students are getting admitted regularly in the various post-graduate courses under Calcutta University and other institutions of higher learning. 
•    Students of this college also excelled in various extra-curricular activities. Educational excursions and field-trips are arranged on regular basis.

SPORTS
•    The College is affiliated to the Sports Board of the University of Calcutta.  Our students always participate in the Inter-College Sports Meet and their performance is satisfactorily admirable.  
•    The College achieved the distinction of winning the inter-district College Knockout Football Championship for the year 2004 & 2005 and also qualified to the final for the year 2006.  
•    Intra-district Athletic Meet and Football Championship for the year 2006 was organised by the College with the honour of winning the district championship title in Athletics.  In the year 2008, College has won Champion’s Trophy in both 9th Inter Non-Government College District Football Championship and 9th Inter Non-Government College District Athletics Meet (Women). 
•    Fakir Chand College has its own outdoor and indoor games and sports facilities with its large and beautiful playground and well-equipped students’ common rooms.  
•    The B.Ed. section of the College is actively engaged in games and sports with their endeavor and skills.  
•    Annual sports of General, B.Ed. and P.G. Sections are organized regularly with colorful participation of students, teachers and non-teaching staff members.
 NSS & NCC
•    As part of its social responsibility, college has strengthened its NSS wing. The number of units has been increased to four from two in the 2008-2009 session. Each unit comprises of 100 students. 
•    It promotes computer literacy among school children among nearby villages, organizes health awareness camps, adult literacy programmes. 
•    In 2008-2009 session, NSS unit of the college organized a Special Camping Programme with financial help from the University of Calcutta at Ram Gobindapur village under the Gram Panchayat of Harin Danga in the Diamond Harbour subdivision of South 24 Parganas District. 
•    Majority of the inhabitants of this village belong to the minority community. 
•    One hundred sixty students from all the four units of NSS from the college participated in the camp which was held from 5.02.09 to 14.02.09. 
•    The camp was divided into four parts comprising Health, Education, Environment and General Awareness.  Health check ups by hospital based doctors along with free medicines were provided to the villagers. 
•    Literacy awareness among the inhabitants of the village was conducted by the volunteers under the guidance of teachers of the college. 
•    Students of Ram Gobindapur free primary school were provided with education kits during the camp. 
•    Volunteers of the camp cleaned up the village and made the villagers aware of keeping the surrounding clean to lead a healthy life. A socio-economic survey has been conducted by the department of economics for future course of action to be taken up for enhancement of the village life.
•    During the session 2008-2009, NSS unit of the college have also undertaken several programmes like Observation of Teachers’ Day, NSS Day, National Youth Day, organizing AIDS Awareness Camp. It organized a seminar on 9.01.09.
•    It plans to observe Human Rights Day, Women Empowerment Day and organize seminars on current relevant topics during the 2009-2010 session.

 





The Fakir Chand College, offers several facilities to its students so that they can pursue their courses without any obstruction and achieve the goal of their life through the education offered by it. The aim of the college is to provide the necessary resources which will be required in the curriculum.
LIBRARY
•    The college has a rich library with a collection of a huge number of text and reference books and a number of journals covering all the disciplines. 
•     Books are purchased with the principal aim of upgradation of academic awareness of both teachers and students.  
•    Teachers and students get ample place, opportunity and environment for reading and borrowing of books and journals within the framework of college rules and regulations.
COLLEGE AUDITORIUM
•    The Golden Jubilee celebration of the College in 1998 was earmarked with the commencement of construction of the Hall-cum-Auditorium on the sprawling premises of the College.  
•    The project on completion will offer spacious lecture and seminar rooms and a large auditorium under one roof.
CANTEEN
•    A canteen building has recently been constructed under MPLAD scheme with the stipulated supervision of Diamond Harbour Municipality. 
•     From this canteen all students, staff and faculty members get wholesome meals and snacks at subsidised rates.
STUDENTS' UNION ROOM
•    The College has a Students’ Union whose General Secretary and all class representatives are elected every year through a well-formulated and well-organized election process.
COMMON ROOM
•    The college has two separate common rooms, one for boy and the other for girl students (constructed with the financial assistance from the MLA & MPLAD funds).  
•    Both the common rooms are equipped with a number of necessary amenities like a number of newspapers and magazines, various indoor game facilities etc. 
LABORATORIES
•    The science faculty of the college possesses well-equipped laboratories of admirable standards.  
•    Computers, technically advanced instruments etc. are readily available to the students to facilitate their learning process.  
•    Respective faculty members are very student-friendly.

There are a number of financial assistance schemes for economically backward as well as for academically good students of the college.  
•    The schemes include ‘‘Students’ Aid Fund’’ for poor and meritorious students, stipends and concessions for meritorious students from economically backward families and also for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students (as per Government rules), national scholarships and national loan scholarships (as sanctioned by the Government), scholarships for the wards of school teachers (as sanctioned by the Government of West Bengal) and scholarships for wards of dock labourers and ‘Bidi Sramiks’ (from the Labour Welfare Board as sanctioned by the Department of Labour, Government of West Bengal).  
•    Also, every year, some memorial prizes / scholarships are awarded to the students for their laudable University results. West Bengal College Employees’ Union  (F.C. College Unit) scholarships are awarded to seven deserving candidates (candidates securing   highest   marks   in  B.A.,  B.Sc.,  B.Com.  Part II Hons.  & General Examinations and B.Ed. final Examination of the University of Calcutta). 
•    Moreover, a fund has been created (Students’ Welfare Fund) by the wishful effort of Prof. Gopal Banerjee, former Vice-Principal of the College,   from which eight scholarships are awarded to the students securing highest marks in B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com. (Hons.), B.A. (Hons.) in Bengali and B.Ed. final examinations of the University of Calcutta.

•    Prof. Anjana Roy Choudhury Memorial Scholarships for both girl and boy students securing highest marks in Mathematics Honours in B.Sc. Final Examination of the University of Calcutta.
•    Dr. Shibaprasad Halder Memorial Scholarship for the most meritorious student of the College.
