Ques. Which is a better option for studying statistics, St. Xavier's College, Kolkata or Presidency University, Kolkata?

● Top Answer By Abanti on 22 Feb 21

Ans. Both colleges are great options for studying statistics.  Presidency University has a glorious history and the department of Statistics is one of the best departments. The university has great alumni which makes it score higher in terms of ‘Heritage’. One of the most famous names among them is P.C. Mahalanobis. There are dedicated faculty members like Prof. BR and Prof. PD, who is an alumnus himself.  One of my friends has Statistics as his electives but he never got the chance to be taught by these reputed faculty members. Students are highly dedicated and excels in their respective university exams. Graduates from this college pursued post-graduate studies from reputed universities like ISI, CMI, IMSc, etc. If you have Honours in Statistics with Mathematics and Economics, then it will be a great combination. In terms of environment, you will get a sense of freedom at Presidency and a change to form a opinion on various aspects of life. However, St. Xavier’s College is also good but it is very strict and you will get a feel of school there. It is known for its discipline while Presidency University is know for its creativity.Read more

Ques. Which is better for a B.Sc in Chemistry (Hons.), St. Xavier's Kolkata or Jadavpur University?

● Top Answer By Pranjal Singhal on 22 Feb 21

Ans. The general preference is that none of the two colleges is a feasible option for pursuing B.Sc (Chemistry). The reasons behind this are listed separately below for both the colleges: Xavier’s is not a good option for chemistry. The faculty is not equipped in teaching in-depth concepts. They do not provide the requisite exposure for broadening a student's knowledge base. A general tendency of faculties is that they don’t recommend books. A huge amount of knowledge is gained by using internet sources which in turn makes them dependent on electronic sources. Internal politics is also an inevitable element of the campus culture. A lot of distraction is inherent in the day-to-day activities. Jadavpur University also gives very less exposure in terms of the knowledge base. A large amount of attention is focused on internal politics which hampers the educational and professional growth of the candidates. Both the colleges reflect quite a dismal picture for this particular course, but even if the choice has to be made it will shift towards Xavier’s Kolkata as in: It is the only NAAC Accredited A++ institute in West Bengal making your degree more reputed and acceptable. It will provide larger scope for better career options in the market. It allows individuals to look out to different personality domains of a candidate as it gives opportunity in the form of various cultural & social events. Overall, Xavier’s is a better option than Jadavpur University in every aspect.Read more

Ques. How’s the BBA program at St. Xavier’s Kolkata?

● Top Answer By Karishma Khatri on 14 May 21

Ans. Bachelor of Business Administration offered by St Xaviers College is a rigorous program. It is at par with the B.Com course if not better. Some other points that you might like to know.  Strict attendance requirements: You have to attend a minimum of 75% of classes in order to be eligible for appearing in the semester exams. You can do with a 60–75% attendance as well by paying a condonation fee per subject. Satisfactory faculty: The faculty is satisfactory as the professors are experienced and student-friendly. They have an approach similar to the ones followed by various B-schools.  Gender ratio: BBA classes are fun in comparison to other classes as the gender ratio is approximately 50-50. Better networking: As the batch size is small, you get to know your classmates quite well. The connections you make at the college can be quite helpful in the future.  Class Schedule: The 4-hour long class schedule is great, as you can concentrate on other things like preparing for CAT or other competitive examinations.  Curriculum: The course curriculum is similar to that of BCom. Only the semester-wise arrangement varies.  Placement: The Placement Cell has picked up its pace in the past few years and has got big names on board like Big 4, Google, Uber, etc. But great packages at the undergrad level are not something very common. For admission, you have to take an entrance test of 50 marks. There is no negative marking. The entrance exam comprises questions from Math and English. Admission is awarded on the basis of board results and entrance test with 50% weightage to each category.Read more

Ques. Among JADAVPUR University, ST XAVIER'S AND CALCUTTA University, which is best to pursue B. Sc. in mathematics Honors?

● Top Answer By Aniket Atul Mahulikar on 11 Jan 21

Ans. Among the three mentioned universities, Jadavpur University is the best to pursue BSc in mathematics Honours without any doubt. The classes are assured regularly and rigorous for those who desire to have a future in mathematics; there should be no doubt in selecting JU.  Comparison: (Winning Institution - Jadavpur University) St. Xaviers became a university recently. A BSc degree from JU holds more value than a bachelor’s degree from St. Xaviers.  Jadavpur University was ranked 196th in Asia by The World University Ranking 2020. The faculty at JU is top-notch. The syllabus adopted by JU is of advantage if you want to pursue higher studies after your degree. You will have better exposure at Jadavpur through regular seminars. Attending seminars delivered by guest faculty from distinguished National institutes, and your seniors pursuing masters and Ph.D. will make an immense difference. If you are choosing St. Xaviers because of the campus, you should visit the Jadavpur University campus.  The classes are regular, and JU follows a rigorous pedagogy. The political environment people talk about is quite exaggerated. If you don't get involved in campus politics, it is never going to bother you.  Jadavpur University contributes much more than just a degree that gives you quality education, which is not restricted to classroom learning. They make sure the students turn into the person they can be and gives them the confidence that no other college in Kolkata does.Read more

Course Curriculum Overview :

B.Com Hons. curriculum was fully updated, most recent amendments were taught to us.Once a year, the Xavier's Commerce Society organises an Industrial visit for the Commerce students charging a fee of ?500.Except a few, most of the faculties are knowledgeable, experienced and effective.Personally, I felt Prof Sonali Saha, Prof Saptarshi Roy and Prof Soumi Bhattacharya were efficient teachers.
