Dr. Tanmoy Kumar Deb is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at JK Lakshmipat University, Jaipur. He has completed his B.Tech and received a Diploma in Civil Engineering. Also, he has done M.Tech in Geotechnical Engineering along with a Ph.D. His Ph.D. research was aimed at understanding the response of monopod bucket foundations supporting wind turbines under typical offshore loading conditions through Finite Element (FE) simulations, and proposing the design expressions. He is currently working on an alternate foundation type i.e. monopile.

What are your fundamental responsibilities towards the students?

To motivate and engage students towards innovative thinking in domains of Civil Engineering”

My responsibilities towards the students as an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Civil Engineering at JK Lakshmipat University are:

  • Design courses and develop methodologies to teach students about the emerging topics of Civil Engineering.
  • To be available to the students for consultation regularly to address their difficulties.
  • Providing extensive coverage of the course and complete the syllabus within the stipulated time.
  • Guiding students on career opportunities in the field.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

Being supportive and flexible to fellow faculty members and students during the hour of needs”

Getting to know the students by their names, hobbies and areas of interests related to the domain act as a key factor in establishing positive relations. Also, making the learning process fun for them, listening to their problems associated with the course helps immensely. For faculty, appreciating their ideas and efforts that they put along with me to run the course smoothly is essential.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Innovative teaching process and knowledge about various software packages used in the industries”

I try the following approaches to teach my subjects to make the courses industry-oriented:

  • A Project-Based Learning (PBL) pedagogy: PBL pedagogy enables the students to gain knowledge through hands-on experience. Students perform experiments, fabricate models/prototypes and carry out simulations to understand the phenomena.
  • Along with regular classroom activities, recent trends and developments adopted by various industries to execute projects are discussed.
  • Various sessions and courses are made available to the students to gain expertise in software packages that are commonly used for drafting, modelling, simulation, analysis, etc.
  • Various experts in the domain of civil engineering are invited to share their insights about the recent developments with the students.
  • The students are encouraged to carry out independent research in collaboration with reputed institutes (e.g. IITs) or learn software packages to address the issues related to civil engineering through a dedicated course, Practice School – I.

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated?

“Annual and semester wise up-gradations are done to keep the course dynamic”

The curriculum is designed by taking into consideration the expectations and needs of the industry. The curriculum is revised every semester/year and emerging core and interdisciplinary subjects are introduced to keep the students up to date. It is designed in such a way that the courses provide extensive coverage of the courses to the students.

What are your views on the placements and higher education of the students from your department?

“Students are regularly trained to analyze complex situations and express themselves during interviews”

The students of JK Lakshmipat University are trained well in civil engineering courses as well as critical thinking and communication courses. These skills help students to crack interviews and clear competitive exams for higher education. Generally, the majority of the students in this university are offered placements directly by the organization where they carry out internship works in Practice School – II. In addition, students have the flexibility to appear for additional placement interviews of various companies that visit the campus over time.

How do you help your students thrive in the current competitive scenario?

“Help mould the students to current industry standards via skill-based courses”

Almost all of the courses of civil engineering curriculum are supplemented with high-quality courses of MOOC platforms (NPTEL, Swayam etc.). In addition, the students are exposed to the application of software packages that are usually used in the construction industry. The students are constantly motivated through expert lectures to make them aware of the developments in the industries.

Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students?

“Innovation challenges are organized to expose the students to real-world challenges”

We organize various departmental activities such as quizzes and innovation challenges for students. These are related to modelling and design competition to address the challenges of civil engineering.
