Mr. Yogesh Rohilla is working as Assistant professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Institute of Engineering and technology at JK Lakshmipat University, Jaipur. He is a recipient of Gold Medal in M.Tech. and has over 10 years of academic, teaching, mentoring and research experience. What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“Effective teaching, mentoring and regular guidance to the students”

My roles and responsibilities include teaching, mentoring and guiding the students. The teaching responsibility includes teaching courses, offering new industry-focused electives and involving students in research activities. As a mentor, my role is to solve my mentee’s personal and professional problems within my capacity. The role of a guide covers a wide area. I guide my students on many fronts, such as deciding the research area and research project, choosing an industry-oriented course, summer training, higher study or job, etc.


How do you tend to establish healthy relations within your Institute?

“Convenient communication and better understanding of perspectives”

Healthy relations can be established by following professional ethics and a good sense of humour. I interact with the students one-to-one, discuss their interests, listen to their issues, and share my stories, and communicate on a regular basis. Working in teams for a common goal, acknowledging the contribution of peers, and giving respect to others’ ideas help me in establishing a healthy relationship with the faculty and other staff members.


How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Combining academics and industry-based learning”

I prefer to take industry examples and problems in teaching a topic. Taking the example of the things which are experienced by the students is most helpful. They can easily correlate with such things. Understanding by laboratory experimentation and projects better equip the students to solve an industry problem. We invite experts from industries, conduct workshops, seminars and competitions to train students. We help them to learn more and to be entrepreneurs of the future.

How do you strategize the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

“Substantial gradation of practical learning approaches throughout”

The first two years in a four-year degree course are focused on developing skills by practising conventional approaches, hands-on training, and project-based learnings. The third year focuses on advanced courses, and the fourth year includes modern industry approaches. Students spend 6 months in the industry during the degree programme, which familiarizes them with industrial approaches and professional know-how. The course curriculum is updated at least once a year with the guidance of industry and academic experts.


How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high?

“Incorporating best practices and enhancing skills of students”

Competition is very high, there is no doubt about it. The things which we inculcate, along with classroom teaching, to make students more equipped than the competition are professional behaviour, teamwork, project-based and project supported learning, 6-month industry training, technical writing, professional ethics, and critical thinking. We conduct many technical as well as non-technical competitions, workshops and presentations. Many student-operated clubs are also active in the University in the areas of technology, culture, society, and personal interests, where students can enhance their skills more often. 


What approaches do you bring in apart from curriculum to train the students?

“Problem-based, cooperative and service learning ideologies”

My target is not just to complete the syllabus but to teach holistically. A teacher is also a facilitator. The approaches I adopt are problem-based learning, cooperative learning, and service learning. Problem-based learning is dealing with a real life problem and applying engineering tools on it. Cooperative learning allows students to share ideas and work in a team to achieve the target. Service learning combines academic skills and civic responsibility.

What valuable advice would you like to give to the students?

“Regular upgradation and networking are important”

My advice to students is to stay focused and up-to-date with the current market trends of Engineering. They must seek internship opportunities and start early to give time to nurture their skills. Also, follow your passion, stay connected and build a network for yourself.
