For GEM, the CAT percentiles required to get an interview call from IIM Blackis, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS, and MDI Gurgaon are

  • ABC and FMS: Both institutes required nothing less than 99.5. Those who get admission at a lesser percentile, usually don’t belong to the GEM category. There are many who don’t even get a call with 99.3. So to stay on the safer side, go for nothing less than 99.5.
  • IIM Indore and Kozhikode: Both the institutes require percentiles around 97.5 for an interview call
  • SPJIMR: This Institute has unique selection criteria under which CAT is given less value and calls are issued on the basis of the candidate's profile. The CAT percentile required in this case is less than the normal if you have a good academic profile along with work experience,
  • MDI: This institute issues calls around the 96% mark.

It’s important to know that these figures are based on trends and not on actual data so you will find exceptions everywhere. Moreover, it’s better you don’t waste time analyzing the CAT cutoff and start preparing for the same.

The required cutoff for IIM BLACKI, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS, and MDI Gurgaon are as follows.

Institute  Cutoff
IIM ABC >99%
FMS  >99%
IIM IK >97.5%
SP Jain 97-98% (Selection is profile-based)
JBIMS  95%
MDI  96%

The above cutoff is according to the last few years' cutoff trends. Naturally, the required cutoff varies each year based on different factors. Also, keep in mind that there will always be people in every college who don’t fall under the bracket mentioned above. However, it is in your best interest to try as much as possible in CAT.

My sister recently joined FMS and she had cleared the CAT with the required percentile. However, it was not only the CAT score which got her into that esteemed institution, but her academic credentials as well. Your CAT percentile has to be at least 98+ to begin the admission process.

Go through the following highlight of the admission procedure of each institution below:

IIM Ahmedabad

  • You need an excellent CAT percentile and must have secured 80%-90% marks in 10th class and 12th class.
  • If you're from humanities, 75%-85% marks will get you a rating score of 9-10.
  • If you've 60-85% marks in graduation, depending on your stream, you're good to go.

FMS

  • It is one of the best ROI-producing management institutes in India and admits on the basis of academic scores, interviews etc. in addition to the CAT score which carries 60% of the total weightage.
  • The personal interview and group discussion have 15% - 10% weightage and the marks obtained in 10th and 12th have 5% weightage respectively.

MDI Gurgaon

  • It can be your place if you love making strong connections in powerful industries. Its placements are excellent as well with a 100% placement rate.
  • You need to have at least 50% marks in 10+2 and graduation to get in.
  • For the PGP IM program, you should also have a year of work experience in your resume too.

Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies: It offers admissions on the basis of MAH CET and CAT scores. Their admission process is more flexible and includes admission through counseling.

SPJIMR: You will be given admission based on academic and extracurricular profile, work experience and CAT scores. Additional achievements are a plus.

There is no fixed CAT percentile that can ensure your admission to the colleges you're seeking. If your academic performance is top notch then your CAT percentile might be compromised; and on the other hand, a good CAT score can make up for a loose academic record.
