Calling the IIM Vishakhapatnam’s hostel the best is literally not an understatement. It’s the world-class amenities combined with the serene surroundings that make it seem like a resort-like experience. One of my friends was a PGP student at Vizag and stayed at a beach-facing hostel. The sunrise and sunset views from the balcony and terrace make it seem like you are in a hotel and make your hostel life really peaceful and more home-like. Are the six newest IIMs a good option? (i.e., IIM Nagpur, Vizag, Amritsar, Sirmaur, Bodhgaya, Sambalpur)
It depends on your profile. If you are a general category student with good academic records - more than 85 percent throughout 10th, 12th, and graduation, then old IIMs will be better.
If you aren’t getting the old IIMs, you can consider new IIMs like IIM Nagpur, Sambalpur, Vizag, Amritsar, Sirmaur, and Bodhgaya. Being part of any recently established institute is a different experience altogether. You will get to set the culture on campus which your juniors will inherit. Which is better: IIM Vizag, IIM Nagpur, or NMIMS Mumbai?
My friend was in a similar dilemma a few years ago. She had offers from NMIMS, SIBM and IIM Nagpur. She wasn’t sure if choosing a new IIM over these B Schools would be a wise decision. Yet she chose Nagpur in the end. Some major reasons that led her to choose it were

- Campus: IIM Nagpur and Vizag both have their own residential campus and amazing hostel facilities. It helps you make new friends and spend time in extracurricular activities and group discussions once your classes are over NMIMS on the other hand lacks hostel facilities
- Location: Nagpur and Vizag both have a location advantage over other new IIMs in the sense that they have airport facilities promoting connectivity.NMIMS enjoys the best location and many top firms visit the campus because of it. But in reality, it is only the ones with the best profiles that get good roles; others are offered average packages only.
- ROI: NMIMS does not offer a good ROU because of its high living expenses. Nagpur leads in this aspect because of minimal living expenses, lower fees than other IIMs, and similar packages.
- Placements: NMIMS has developed a strong alumni base and therefore attracts many top firms. But like I mentioned above, 80% of the batch is offered average roles. It’s only the ones with spectacular profiles that get the best roles. IIMs have a balanced placement scenario in contrast.
- Brand Value: Despite the unending debate, one cannot deny the brand value of the IIM tag. There are certain HRs from top organizations who still prefer IIM students over other top B Schools. This is the sole reason why the new IIMs give an edge to B Schools like IMT, SIBM Pune, etc.
Based on the above parameters you have to make a decision according to your preferences. My friend was glad she chose IIM Nagpur and it helped her uplift her career through various opportunities.
Can I be eligible for IIM Visakhapatnam with my academic records 10th 85%, 12th 92%, and graduation 62%?

My sister was a student at IIM Visakhapatnam and always praised Prof. Jayasankar Ramanathan specifically. She used to say that although every teacher in IIMs is unique, this particular professor had the ability to grab the attention of the weakest minds. His pedagogy was like no other. Here are some highlights of his unique teaching methodology.
- Right on the first day he will give you a question paper with basic questions related to your prior knowledge of marketing. He does the same on the last day and now you have to answer based on the knowledge you have acquired in 2 years. Then he gives you both the answer sheets and asks you to compare your answers. The drastic difference stems from the elaborate knowledge you have acquired in 2 years.
- The topics are usually covered through case discussions
- The students are selected for class discussions by drawing their roll numbers anonymously
- He is amazing with drawing insights from numbers and tables
- He prefers formal contact between students and himself via mail or prior appointments.
- He focuses a lot on disciplinary conduct
- He refuses to clear doubts in the middle of the class. You can jot them down and ask them the next day
