CAT Percentile Calculation 2022: Candidates often find it difficult to understand how CAT percentile is calculated. For a better understanding of candidates, a stepwise method of CAT 2022 Score and Percentile Calculation is mentioned below in the article. First of all, let us understand what is CAT Percentile: It is a relative score that indicates the percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to a particular candidate. In other words, if a candidate scores 99 percentile, then the performance of that candidate is better than 99% of CAT test-takersCheck CAT 2022 Score Vs Percentile

As per latest updates, 2 questions (1 each from shift 2 and shift 3) of DILR section have not been considered for CAT 2022 score calculation. CAT Committee reported these questions to be ambiguous. For the candidates of these 2 shifts, DILR scores have been adjusted on a prorata basis (based on how the remaining questions in DILR section are attempted). CAT Percentile for each candidate is mentioned on CAT Scorecard released with the declaration of CAT 2022 Result on Dec 21, 2022.

CAT 2022 Answer keys and Response Sheets were released by IIM on December 1, 2022. The answer key can be used by the candidates for calculating their raw scores. Check CAT 2022 Response sheet

The procedure and formula of CAT Score & Percentle Calculation for preparing the PI shortlists is given by the IIMs in their respective admission brochures. Candidates can also use CAT 2022 College Predictor to easily assess their CAT percentile as well as their chances of getting into different management institutes.

How Scaled CAT Score will be Calculated for Three Slots?

CAT 2022 exam has been conducted in three slots. With no changes in CAT exam pattern from last year, the total marks of the paper are 198.

While illustrating the scaling process, CAT chose QA section as an example. Similar process will be valid for the other two sections, i.e. DILR and VARC.

  • Step 1: Calculate the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in QA section for all candidates appearing in the morning session. Let Mean = M1 and SD = S1 and G1 = M1 + S1.
  • Step 2: Calculate the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in QA section for all candidates appearing in the afternoon session. Let Mean = M2 and SD = S2 and G2 = M2 + S2.
  • Step 3: Calculate the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in QA section for all candidates appearing in the evening session. Let Mean = M3 and SD = S3 and G3 = M3 + S3.
  • Step 4: Calculate the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in QA section for all candidates appearing in CAT (i.e. including all the three sessions). Let Mean = M and SD = S and G = M + S.
  • Step 5: Calculate the mean raw score in QA section of the top 0.1% of candidates in the morning session and denote it by
  • Step 6: Calculate the mean raw score in QA of top 0.1% of candidates in the afternoon session and denote it by
  • Step 7: Calculate the mean raw score in QA of top 0.1% of candidates in the evening session and denote it by

Suppose now XYZ is a candidate who appeared in the morning session and the raw score in QA section is R. Then the scaled score of XYZ in QA, say is given by:

:

In case XYZ is a candidate who appeared in the afternoon session and the raw score in QA section is R. Then the scaled score of XYZ in QA, say is given by:
In case XYZ is a candidate who appeared in the evening session and her raw score in QA section is R. Then the scaled score of XYZ in QA, say given by:
Similar Methodology is applied for computation of scaled scores for other sections. If this formula yields any scaled score as more than 100, it will be rounded down to 100.

CAT 2022 Percentile Score Calculation

Keeping Quantitative Ability (QA) as an example, the stepwise procedure for the calculation of overall score and percentile score is as follows:

  • Step 1: Calculate the total number of candidates (N) who appeared for CAT in all sessions.
  • Step 2: Assign a rank (r), based on the scaled scores obtained in the QA section, to all candidates who appeared for CAT 2022. If two or more candidates obtain equal scores in the QA section, then identical ranks will be assigned to those candidates.

For example, if two candidates obtain the highest scaled score in the QA section, then the assigned rank of both the candidates will be 1. The candidate(s) obtaining the second highest scaled score in the QA section will be assigned Rank 3 and so on.

  • Step 3: The percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank(r) in the QA section can be calculated using the following formula:

P = ((N-r) N) x 100

  • Step 4: Finally, round off the calculated percentile score (P) of a candidate up to two decimal points. For example, all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.995 are rounded off to 100, all percentile scores which are greater than or equal to 99.985 but less than 99.995 are rounded off to 99.99 and so on.

Normalization Process

CAT Normalization Process

  • Exam creation is a set of statistically profiled questions. These questions of same difficulty levels are used in re-scaling candidate’s score to the metric of item bank.
  • The questions are properly analysed and their difficulty levels is assessed according to a standard metric.
  • The normalization carries a base assumption that “in all multi session CAT papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all of the sessions”.
  • Then, the raw score of the candidate is scaled, and scores are established accordingly. This helps in awarding ranks to the candidates.
  • The percentile rank is equated based on percentage score that falls below a certain specified score.
  • With the total scale scores arranged in rank order from the lowest to highest in 100 equally sized groups, a table with the total scale scores to percentile ranks will be created.
  • After the scores are identified and arranged, high scoring candidate’s name will be determined from the top among high scorers and subsequent list of low scorers.
  • CAT percentile decides the rank of a management aspirant, relative to the rest of the aspirants who appeared for the same MBA entrance exam. The basic idea of the CAT percentile is to tell you what per cent of the students have scored less than you in the examination.

CAT Marking Scheme

CAT Marking Scheme

CAT scores are sub-normalized based on three parts of the exam- Quantitative Reasoning, Data Interpretation, and Logical Reasoning and Verbal and Reading Comprehension. CAT exam score, which is valid for one year only, is converted into percentile form and the best scorer is highlighted at the top to up the level of competition.

  • A candidate is awarded three marks each for the correct answer.
  • However, it also applies negative marking, since one mark each is deducted for every wrong answer.
  • Candidates may note that no mark will be deducted for an unanswered question.
  • CAT score helps in shortlisting of the eligible candidates for further rounds.

CAT exam generally maintains a consistent level of difficulty throughout the examination process. CAT Exam is designed in a manner that makes it difficult for candidates to answer all the questions correctly and thus chances for a perfect score are minimal.

How is CAT Score Equated?

How is CAT Score Equated?

Equating CAT follows a psychometric process to adjust differences in difficulty level. The process is followed to keep a tab on comparable metric and be justified to candidates who test across multiple days. There are three phases in equating the CAT Exam

  • Raw scores are calculated where three marks are awarded for a correct answer, and one mark is deducted for every wrong answer.
  • Through an equating process, raw scores are adjusted for variances in difficulty levels across the different test forms. Then through statistical properties, candidates’ performance is judged on the same questions asked in two or more different forms. These equating measures help to adjust raw marks accordingly.
  • Equating helps in placing the scores on a common scale and create a range of scores which help in creating percentile rank.

Ques. Should I join IIM-Kozhikode or give CAT again or try for PGPX next year with 3 years of work-ex?

● Top Answer By Ankit Sinha on 17 Nov 22

Before taking any decision, you must go through all three options that you have in great detail. There are a few reasons why you should not go for IIM-Kozhikode. First, the fees are extremely high, estimated to be around Rs 19.00 lakh. Second, the average package offered at IIMK is around 16-17L, and you will earn more than that after two years. But, once again, if you are desperate for an MBA, you can enroll in IIMK, which comes with the 'IIM' label, which will be very useful in the long run. Give CAT once more. You only need to get a high CAT score and then leave the rest up to their selection process. Second, CAT is extremely unpredictable. With proper preparation, you can achieve excellent results. So, if you're willing to work another year and are confident enough to take the CAT, this is the perfect way to take it. You should look into PGPX from ISB or elsewhere. This option is appealing, but it requires hard work and careful consideration. If you enjoy working in IT and want to advance quickly, this is the path to take....Read more

Ques. What is the admissions procedure for IIM after CAT results?

● Top Answer By Orchid Chowdhury on 07 Dec 21

Every IIMS and other management colleges make a shortlist based on the percentile after CAT result is declared. With percentile, IIMs also consider other factors like academics, category, gender factor, diversity, etc. The list is made for the second round i.e. GD/PI or WAT/PI.  GD/WAT will have a generic topic. There can be a topic from current affairs. PI is taken by some of the faculty and alumni of the institute. In institutes like FMS, there is an extempore after PI.  After these rounds, a final shortlist is made with weightage given to GD/PI or WAT/PI performance and CAT percentile. Individual IIMs also have some additional factors. The offer letters are then sent out to top candidates in each category up to the maximum number of seats. The rest candidates are waitlisted. As students choose admissions, the waitlist continues to change. ...Read more

Ques. Should I take IIM-Kashipur/IIM-Raipur or take the CAT &/or GMAT again?

● Top Answer By Aditya Mahatha on 06 Jan 23

I know this decision is a bit difficult to make. What you need to keep in mind is that these two colleges should not be compared to other great IIMs or even ISBs. Those B Schools are at another level and cannot be on par with Kashipur or Raipur. To facilitate a better decision, I will mention the circumstances of these B Schools then you can choose after considering all options. IIM Indore and IIM Kashipur: Both these colleges are not worth a year drop as they will help you earn only an extra 1.5-2 LPA. Moreover, in the coming years, Kashipur and Raipur will have almost the same brand value as that Indore and Kozhikode. IIM Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Lucknow and Bangalore: All these top IIMs are definitely worth a year's drop provided that you are confident enough to cope with the cutoff. All these IIMs consider your academics while selecting so if that is your reason for the year drop I don’t think it will help. There is no surety of admission even after a percentile of 100.  ISB: This one is at a whole different level and is in the category of elite B Schools like UCB, NYU, HBS, etc. The top-notch faculty offers amazing pedagogy at relatively low fees. CAT is sufficient for IIMs. But if you want to go for ISB, a work experience of 4+ years and a GMAT are a must. ...Read more

Ques. What is the IIM selection process in detail? What is the advantage of having job experience or being a fresher in the IIM selection process?

● Top Answer By Surbhi Mishra on 08 Jul 22

IIMs shortlists students for admission based on their CAT score. The second step of selection is GD-PI. For final selection, students are usually shortlisted based on their past academic performance, entrance examination score, and performance in GD-PI. IIMs also consider other factors such as work experience, gender diversity, academic diversity, etc. while shortlisting students. Weights given to these factors are different for different IIMs.  Having relevant work experience can certainly help you get a shortlist. ...Read more

Ques. What kind of profile is required to clear the CAT interview for IIM Ahmedabad?

● Top Answer By Ahana Mishra on 29 Nov 22

Everyone knows that IIM A values diversity over grades. There have been students who were not even waitlisted at IIM K but were at IIM A due to their extremely unique profiles. If you want to build a profile for IIM A, strive for originality. Do something that no one else is doing, such as starting a blog, having a strong digital presence on Instagram, writing on Quora, and so on. Consider what students with a 99 percentile typically do, such as being brilliant in academics and receiving a call from IIM Ahmedabad. Choose a domain in which these students are unlikely to excel and excel in that domain. Furthermore, activities such as writing a blog or hosting a YouTube channel will undoubtedly help you, in the long run, to secure summer and final placements during your MBA. As a result, you will gain valuable insights and hands-on experience with various social media tools such as SEO, SEM, Analytics, and so on....Read more
