Who are some of the best professors at IIM Bangalore and why?

RD
Radhe Krishna Dutta Posted On : January 5th, 2023
Staying hungry. Staying wise.

YLR Moorthi: If genius is made up of 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration, then YLR's classes are made up of 50% inspiration and 50% perspiration. His classes typically experience an Aha or Eureka moment.

Every class begins with a presentation by a student team. During the Q&A session that follows, he makes every single student sweat, both mentally and physically.

The following are some of his suggestions that you will remember for the rest of your life. They may appear to be so simple, but only when said emphatically by him in the most appropriate context do those words become ingrained in you:

  1. Money can be found wherever there is an annoyance.
  2. Everything in this world can be summed up in a single word or sentence. Brevity is synonymous with wit.
  3. Don't just read passively; Begin challenging the author's ideas; just because someone is a Kotler or a Keller doesn't mean he is always correct.
  4. When considering any business, consider three factors: idea, monetization, and execution. To be successful, it must pass all three tests.

Apart from that, he recommends books, authors, and movies in each of his classes. His stories and examples stick with you.

MBA Operations Management & Finance, Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management and Engineering, NMIMS

At IIM ABC, textbooks aren’t the primary source of learning. Textbooks are used more as reference material. Students mostly learn through classroom and case studies. Here are the books that are generally recommended for Finance, marketing, Strategy, and Operation Management.

  • Accounting by Anthony, Hawkins, and Merchant
  • Principle of Marketing - Philip Kotler
  • Operations Management - Stevenson
  • Economics - Paul Samuelson
  • Microeconomics - Paul Krugman
  • Macroeconomics - Dornbusch, Fisher and Startz
  • Competitive Strategy - Michael E Porter

These are the reference books used in the first year.

IIM Calcutta Vs. IIM Bangalore debate is a never-ending one, and there is no clear winner. Both of these institutes are among the top in management education and have their advantages.

  • Faculty wise there are no such differences between the two IIMs.
  • In terms of location, IIM Bangalore is definitely better. The city is a hub of industry houses, so you will get better placement opportunities and exposure.
  • Contrary to the various rumors, placement at IIM A, B, and C is almost similar.
  • IIM C offers a wide array of electives. You are free to choose from a huge variety of courses depending on your interests and career plans.

Both institutes are at the top of their game and will offer you many opportunities to grow.

What is the CAT cut off to join IIM B?

PS

For qualifying, IIM Bangalore Cutoff is 85 percentile. However, the cutoff trends indicate that the required cutoff for admission is around 99 percentile for general category students.

IIM Bangalore places significant weightage on work experience for interview shortlisting. If you have relevant work experience of 2 years or more, and a decent academic record, you can expect an interview call even with a percentile lower than 99.

What percentile should I score in CAT (GEM) to have a fair chance for IIM ABCLKIS, MDI, FMS, SPJIMR, and NITIE provided I have 95% in both 10th, 12th and 8.7 CGPA in BTech (fresher)?

To increase your chances of getting a call from different MBA colleges, it's important to know their criteria for selection.

  • IIM Indore focuses primarily on academic scores.
  • MDI doesn't consider academic scores but may grill candidates for low scores.
  • Bangalore looks for both academics and work experience.
  • Calcutta typically gives out calls to candidates with very high percentiles.
  • Ahmedabad looks for academic diversity.
  • SPJIMR considers your overall profile and academics.
  • Kozhikode focuses on gender diversity and requires a very high percentile score.
  • Shillong and NITIE typically call candidates with scores around 97, but NITIE has a higher cutoff for VARC.
  • For Bangalore, a fresher may need a score of around 99.8-99.9, and with work experience, a score of around 98.8 may suffice.
  • For Kozhikode, aim for a percentile score of 99.9 or above.
  • FMS typically calls candidates with a score of 99.3 but aims for a score of 99.6 to increase conversion chances.

To increase your chances of getting a call, aim for a high percentile score.

What is the minimum CAT score required to get into IIM A, B, C or FMS, DU or MDI, Gurgaon?

PS
Piyush Sharma Posted On : February 23rd, 2023
MBA from Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (2021)

The entire admission process to any college is divided into 2 broad spectrums; the initial shortlisting and the Final Selection. While it is easy to get a rough estimate of the minimum CAT score required to fetch calls from institutes like IIM ABC, FMS Delhi, and MDI Gurgaon, one cannot predict the CAT score required to get selected in the final round. This is because the final selection is done on the basis of a number of factors like CAT, Interview, academic background and overall profile. Based on my research and experience, I have tried my best to give a general overview of the CAT cutoff of these institutes individually.

IIM Ahmedabad: The minimum CAT score required for admission in IIM Ahmedabad MBA (PGP) for 2023 Admission is the 80 percentile. However, the actual CAT Cutoff for IIM Ahmedabad usually ranges between 99-100. They shortlist the top 50/100 people from different academic fields provided they clear the basic cutoff.

IIM Bangalore: The minimum cutoff for MBA Admission at IIM Bangalore is 85 percentile. However, candidates having a CAT Score of 99 percentile or more can expect a call from IIM Bangalore. They weigh in things like academic records and work-ex for giving out interview calls. So you can receive a call at a score of 95 and you can also not receive a call even at 99.99 %ile.

IIM Calcutta: Candidates must have obtained at least 85 percentile in CAT overall. IIM Calcutta gives major weightage to the CAT score and gender diversity.

FMS Delhi: FMS gives calls solely on the basis of CAT score and does not give any weightage to past academics at all. So the FMS CAT cutoff is as high as the 98 percentile.

MDI Gurgaon: MDI Gurgaon CAT Cutoff range between 93 and 95 percentile for admission 2023.

When did IIM Bangalore last conduct CAT?

SS
Shiv Shakti Posted On : December 30th, 2022
IIT Delhi 2012-16, IIM Ahmedabad 2016-18

The Common Admission Test (CAT) 2022 is the required entrance exam for MBA admission to all 20 IIMs, FMS Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai, MDI Gurgaon, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, NITIE Mumbai, and hundreds of other top B-schools in India for the class of 2023. Every year, over two lakh candidates take the CAT to investigate admission opportunities in MBA programs offered by IIMs and other top MBA colleges in India. CAT was a paper-and-pencil test until 2008. Since 2009, the exam has gone green and switched to a computer-based format.

The CAT exam was first held at IIM Bangalore in 2016. It held CAT for the last time on November 27, 2022.

What's the main criteria for getting selected at IIM Bangalore?

MK
Mayuri Katiyar Posted On : December 21st, 2022
Studied CS at McMaster University

Unlike IIM Ahmedabad which just considers the top CAT score, IIM Bangalore’s criteria for selection depends on the following parameters

    • Past academic score: 50% weightage (20% 10th class, 10%12th class, and 20% graduation)
    • Work experience: 8% weightage (preferably 3 yrs and above)
  • Gender diversity: 2%
  • CAT score: 40% weightage

So to get a call from IIM Bangalore you need to have good academic records (around 95), 3 or more years of working experience and a CAT score of around 99 percentile. But if you lack in the academic record area, gain more work experience and then achieve a CAT score of around 99.7+.

Does getting a 99 Percentile in CAT guarantee you a seat in IIM-A, B or C?

AG
Arpit Gupta Posted On : December 19th, 2022
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (Expected 2024)

No, a 99 percentile in CAT does not guarantee a seat in IIM A B or C. One of my friends had an amazing profile with

  • 99 percentile in CAT
  • above 90 past academic scores (10th and 12th)
  • Tier 1 undergraduate institute (Old NIT)
  • 5 internships
  • one international project in the US
  • great extracurricular record (many awards in sports)
  • Proficiency in multiple languages
  • Leadership experiences
  • Research papers

Despite having such a high profile he failed to get a single interview call from any IIM. The reservation policy combined with favour towards female candidates minimises the opportunities for even top CAT percentilers.
