Why are IIM A, B, and C valued over FMS, Delhi when the difference between the fees are so high?

ID
Ishika Dey Posted On : December 31st, 2022
MBA from Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi (Graduated 2021)

People often pose the question that despite the high fees, why do some people still prefer IIMs over FMS? Well, I think I can answer it with confidence since my father is an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad. He told me that he was able to transform into a new person all because of IIM Ahmedabad. He was able to achieve many impossible things just because he chose IIM Ahmedabad. I have mentioned a few points that will help you understand what I mean

  • After completing his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad he was able to pursue a technical MS and Ph.D. in Computer Science from North America.
  • He is now well settled in the US. He thinks it would have been impossible to move out of India had he not chosen IIM Ahmedabad.
  • IIM Ahmedabad gave him the mindset and skills of finding opportunities in life and businesses and making the most out of them.
  • The case-based pedagogy helped him tackle all kinds of problems he encountered in his life, be it scientific, academic, or business.
  • It gave him the confidence to start his own business. Although it did not go quite well he still was proud to have the guts to try it.
  • He had the excellent opportunity to learn from the best peers who were handpicked from a group of 80,000 applicants.

So IIM Ahmedabad is still preferred over FMS. It has its own brand value which will continue to shine over the years.

Can I get IIM Bangalore with 77.4 in 12th and 56.6 in graduation?

KN
Kamal Nayan Posted On : December 30th, 2022
Studied at IIM Bangalore

If you are a General Engineer Male, even with a perfect CAT score, getting into IIM Bangalore is nearly impossible. Your 12th-grade point average is low. Your UG grades are even worse. If you are not an engineer, you may have a chance with a high CAT percentile, but there is no guarantee.

IIMB looks for consistent and high academic performance throughout the 10th, 12th, and UG years.

Over the years, IIMB has discovered that students who perform well in the academic program typically have a consistently good academic record throughout their school, high school, and graduation levels, in addition to demonstrating sufficiently high aptitude as measured by the CAT (Common Admission Test of the IIMs)/GMAT. As a result, IIMB evaluates candidates' suitability for the PGP program using a variety of criteria, including academic performance in school, high school, and graduation programs, as well as CAT/GMAT scores.

I want to get into IIM Bangalore without work experience is that possible?

DT
Dheeraj Tripathi Posted On : July 30th, 2021
Studied at Amity University (2019)

One of my friends studied at IIM Bangalore. According to him, work experience is definitely important for IIM Bangalore.

  • There are other ways through which you can join IIM Bangalore and one of them is by clearing your CAT examination. Your score should be around 99.90+.
  • Another way is having a great academic profile. You should have work experience of being associated with a certain firm or organization.
  • A certain extracurricular activity that you were a part of in your college life could improve your profile.
  • Your academic score is anticipated to be 90% and above in the 10th and 12th boards.
  • You must have secured 70%-80% in your graduation.

This would be an ideal profile suitable to be a part of IIM Bangalore.

Here’s presenting different components and their weightage for different rounds like- GD, PI, and even WAT. These are as follows:

Components Weightage
Quantitative Aptitude (QA) 10
Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VARC) 14
Data Interpretation/Logical Reasoning (DILR) 16
CAT score (QA+VARC+DILR) (Total) 40
Professional course/Work experience 8
High School 20
Intermediate 10
Undergraduate 20

This is the weightage that determines your selection. It is suggested that you work really hard for your CAT exams to get admission to IIM Bangalore. Make sure you have proper work experience.

Should I join IIM Bangalore or take a job at Ernst Young as an Associate Consultant?

YV

MBA from Management Development Institute, Gurgaon (Graduated 2017)

Following IIT, IIM Bangalore will provide you with even more opportunities.

Things that may be bothering you include:

  • Low Engineering CGPA - You should talk to IIM Bangalore graduates with similar profiles and ask if they have any problems as a result.
  • Give CAT next year - While many people maintain high percentiles year after year, there are some who drop from 99 to 98. You never know what will happen the following year. It doesn't get any better than this for you, because IIM ABC is in the same league.
  • You can take Ernst Young now as an Associate Consultant and after 3-4 years, do an MBA from Harvard or Stanford.
  • You can also stick with Ernst Young and then advance your career in the consulting field from there.

Do your homework and make a decision that is beneficial to you.

Do verified certifications from edX (IIMBx -IIM Bangalore in my case) add brownie points to one's resume?

AS
Aravind Sethuraj Posted On : December 21st, 2022
MBA in Business, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (Graduated 2019)

The simple answer is yes, verified certificates from edX do add value to your resume. But the point is that only adding value to your resume is not sufficient. You should broaden your approach and consider this certification more than just adding value. Use it to inculcate skills that will help you in this fast-paced world. If you do this certification wholw_heartedly you will gain confidence to present yourself for the interview and also give the impression that you are constantly working towards improving yourself.

So the certificate itself won't be much beneficial in the long run but the skills acquired from it will.

Would it be wise to quit my job (that gives me 13 lakhs per annum) at Cisco if I get into IIM Bangalore, and take a loan of 18 lakhs for the fees?

AM
Abir Mondal Posted On : July 29th, 2021
Studied at IIM Bangalore (2019)

It is quite obvious that if you are already doing a job that gives you 13 lakh per annum, it is your naivete if you want to join IIM and take a loan of 18 lakhs.

  • If you are more inclined towards the technicality of the things and working for the same, you should indulge yourself in gaining experience in that particular field.
  • Do not think of taking a huge burden of loan that you need to pay ultimately with heavy interests.
Categories IIM Bangalore
Course Fee 14 lakhs
Highest CTC 60 LPA
Average CTC 28-29 LPA
Recruiting Companies Mindtree, Asian Paints, Mercedes, HSBC, etc.

Think twice before making this decision and in my opinion, it is better to gain the hands-on experience that embarks you towards success in your life early, than spending a huge amount of money doing an MBA and then pursuing the job.

How can engineering students get into IIM Bangalore?

RS
Rhea Sharan Posted On : December 12th, 2022
College student 2014-2020

Admissions are based on applications received through the Common Admission Test (CAT), which is held in November each year at various locations across India by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Short-listed candidates must take a written test and a personal interview, as well as provide three Letters of Reference from people who are familiar with their academic or professional performance.

The final decision is depended on CAT performance, Scholastic Achievement, Work Experience, Writing Ability Test performance, and an interview.

I have above 90% in tenth and 12th, but in BTech I have 67%. I have 2 years of work experience. I belong to OC. Can I get a seat in IIM Bangalore? If possible, on what percentile?

HB
Harsh Bhardwaj Posted On : July 31st, 2021
Studied at IIJNM Bangalore (2019)

Your chances of getting a call from IIM Bangalore are only if you belong to the top 10 CAT toppers with a 100% percentile.

Selection criteria are irrespective of anything including the work experience you mentioned in your question. The only chance you might get a call is if some of the toppers have a very bad academic record. In this way, the next candidates in line might get the golden opportunity, which is rare.

To be honest, your graduation score might make it quite difficult to get a call from IIM B, but you can expect a miracle if you have scored a 100 percentile or a minimum of 99.5 + percentile in CAT. Only after getting such exceptional scores, your 2 years of work experience might give an advantage as IIM Bangalore gives preference to the experienced candidates along with the percentile mentioned.

How good is the IIM Bangalore Business Analytics Program?

LA
Lagan Aarya Posted On : December 30th, 2022
Studies at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (Expected 2023)

The Post Graduate Program in Business Analytics (PGPBA) at IIM Bangalore is a subset of the PGP program and is fully compatible with it.

  • There is no such thing as a PGPBA section, and all sections are made up of a mix of PGP and PGPBA students.
  • PGP and PGPBA courses are offered in Term 1 and Term 2. From Term 3 onwards, PGPBA has a well-designed analytics curriculum. In comparison to the PGP, the curriculum is more intensive and Math-heavy. PGP students can take the mandatory subjects for PGPBA students as electives.
  • Summer, lateral, and final placements are common for PGP and PGPBA students, with ample opportunities for PGPBA students. In the summer, a large portion of the batch received consulting offers.
  • PGPBA students, like PGP students, are eligible for term exchange.

The PGPBA program is similar to an MBA with a specialization in Business Analytics, and there are no significant differences between the PGP and PGPBA programs. It was created with the growing importance of business analytics in mind, as well as the growing demand for talent to analyze and demystify big data.
