What is better for mathematics and computing, IIT Kanpur vs IIT Kharagpur vs IIT Guwahati vs IIT BHU?
If you are interested in CSE but choosing Mathematics and Computing just for the sake of overlapping courses, then trust me you are making the wrong decision. I have seen many CSE branch seekers taking Mathematics and Computer to land CSE-related jobs. Let me tell you frankly, Mathematics and Computing are no substitutes for Computer Science.
If you want to get a deeper understanding of this, go through the Syllabus of Mathematics. You will find most courses that are theoretical, abstract, and purely mathematical and very few courses related to Computer Science. Mathematics at IITs is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is extremely tough, unlike JEE Math.
However, if you are passionate about Mathematics and want to pursue a research career in it, go for it. The courses might include lengthy proofs of Mathematical Induction and set and relation theory. Discuss the curriculum once with students of Mathematics at IIT and then make the final decision. Usually, the coursework in Mathematics and Computing is the same for all the IIT Branches.
To sum it up, if you are planning to take Mathematics and Computers just for the CSE courses, please make a better decision. My best advice would be to go for CSE in a better engineering college like IIT Hyderabad or Indore.

Some of my friends are pursuing Mathematics and Computing from IIT BHU. Here is a brief insight into the course.
Ratio:
- At IIT BHU, the ratio of Mathematics and Computing can’t be defined specifically, as you will be choosing the courses you want to study for CS.
Course Structure:
- In the first year, there are only two departmental courses, i.e. Abstract Algebra from Mathematics and Java from Computing. You will also learn basic engineering courses, C will be included in it.
- In the second year, the course structure is common for CS and MnC. Other than a few courses from Mathematics like Probability and Statistics, Numerical Analysis, etc. most of the courses are from CSE.
- 3rd year will mostly cover Mathematics courses. If you are interested in Mathematics, you will get good research opportunities in foreign universities. Besides Mathematics, there are one or two good CS courses too in the 3rd semester. Management and Humanities courses start from the 3rd year and will be in the course till the last semester of the 5th year.
- The 4th year only covers a few courses. You will need to do your B.Tech project this year. The 8th semester is full of electives, so you will get to choose your courses. There are ample electives from both departments. Graduation ends in the 4th year.
- For masters, in your 5th year, you will only need to do your thesis and one or two departmental electives.
Compared to other colleges, the course structure for MnC offered at IIT BHU is quite good.
Placements:
The placement scenario for MnC students is getting better. Recruiters for CSE have started appreciating MnC students. Goldman Sachs, Oracle, Google are some of the major recruiters for the branch.
IIT BHU and IIT G are good options for pursuing MnC. You shouldn’t compare the degree offered at IIT BHU and IIT G with the MnC degrees offered at IIT KGP and IITK. The degree offered for MnC at IIT K and IIT KGP is B.S and M.S respectively. There are considerable differences.

Assuming one has already evaluated to go for Mathematics and Computing, there is no straight answer for this. The few of the parameters on which it can be judged are as below
Syllabus and Structure
Since you are opting for Mathematics and Computing you cannot heavily incline and it’s not possible curriculum wise too. Depending upon one’s interest it is suggested to take a 60-40 subject split. If you are thinking of Computer as the major split, then it is better to have professors from the department of CS to teach you the subject which is not the case in some college. One must decide by looking up the course structure and especially the electives. Another factor is the faculty if they are from the department of the concerned subject or not also play a role.
Duration
- It is a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree at IIT Kanpur
- IIT Kharagpur offers a 5-year MSc Degree
- A 4-year B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing at IIT Guwahati
- It is a 5-year Integrated Masters Course at IIT BHU
Placements
Mathematics and Computing graduates are hired by companies that come for campus placements in the CS as well as Mathematics branches. Some of the companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Oracle, Yahoo, Goldman Sachs, etc. One must check the placement reports beforehand if they want to start their career with a particular company. Though it is advised not to base one’s decision on it.
Faculty to Student Ratio
This is also an important factor in terms of the quality of teaching that students might get. When one is evaluating on this metric, please identify whether the CS subjects are being taught by Mathematical department professors which are not desirable.

One should also visit and look out for all the professors and their research work which will help in identifying the forte of the collective group.
